That is only a good sign I suppose Beechnut, Shows good amount of food is it in the area for them, I think this gorgeous weather helps aswell with finding food. That's what I keep telling myself Paul..... and Sue this is the first year for some time that I've got to the end of the first week and they have not taken any mealworms from the box feeders or Scotties. In the past often one of the parent birds would feed almost 100% from the feeder on the fence (see in latest photos) once the chicks could handle 'the big stuff', while the other mixed mealies with more natural delicacies like spiders, caterpillars, moths etc. It was usually the female that took the easy route across the lawn to the feeder.

Thanks Diane, Taz and Elle... Mealworms or no mealworms, the famous five are progressing well, they are showing the dark markings on their bodies now and are a lot more energetic.

Tuppence has found the mealies in the Scottie feeder secreted in the plum tree. So far she's delivered the last dozen feeds from the feeder - Tommy is still bringing in the oversized stuff that really takes some swallowing! I'll give him his due though, he watches and waits to ensure it goes down and takes away anything that emerges from 'the other end'.

Tuppence is working overtime since she discovered mealies in the Scott feeder in the plum tree/
I recorded her bringing in a mealie 3 times in under a minute.

Thanks Paul and Sue. My five are coming on in leaps and bounds - wing feathers well and truly sprouted. Tuppence has enlarged the cup to enable them to fit in comfortably.

Thanks Helen. Here's an idea of how the chicks are developing - they are 8/9 days old now - you can plainly see the feathers starting to appear on various parts of the chicks' bodies.

Don't remind me Paul - around 10 days' time, it will be over, unless I get a later nest in one of my other boxes.(I don't think I've ever had a second nest in the same box). Anyway Tommy and 2p are both feeding mini mealworms, 2p from the Scottie in the plum tree and Tommy from my original home made anti starling box which must be over five years old and kept on the covered bird table a bit further down the garden and nearer the path. This all bodes well for the arrival today of a batch of regular mealworms, which I reckon the chicks are ready for now.

Glad they are taking the supplements Beechnut that must be a relief for you they look as if they are coming on a treat! The birds this year are certainly following a similar pattern. Noticed a green caterpillar coming into the nest for Flo as well as mealies so good news all round, hope it stays that way .

Kathy, Diane, Sue and Elle, yes they are really doing well, Tommy and Twopence feeding in frenzied spells about every half hour.
Here's a clip from a recent spell, where they managed three visits in less than a minute. You can probably just about see that 2p, second in, has two or three mealies in her beak!

As an idea of the distance Tommy and 2p have to fly to keep up the supply of mealies, mainly from the Scott feeder - The feeder on the fence post is about 9 metres from the nestbox and the Scott feeder can be seen (bit blurry) just over the top of the second fence panel to the right of the post and about a couple of metres back in the plum tree.
