Hello all hope you have had a lovely Christmas and Happy new year! after my dismal results with nests on my patch last year I am hoping to get something better this year I was very pleased to see a great tit checking out my log box earlier today, he didn't quite go in but at least it has been discovered! have had a regular robin visiting and singing his heart out, also bluetits on my sunflower feeders and starlings entering the boxes, so it is all looking up! good luck everyone

It looks like a pair of starlings have now claimed the box! I also have a bluetit roosting in one of my boxes and a robin nesting in a box in the bay tree I saw the female come in with the nextdoor neighbours dog hair this morning to line it so hopefully eggs won't be too far away.

I'm hoping all will be well with this nest there was still 3 eggs when I took another peak the other day when I expected there to be 4 and the female was nowhere to be seen although I did see the confused male going to the nest with food in his beak and then fly away looking, I hope she is ok, the sparrowhawk was around today I won't be checking for a while so hopefully she is there incubating, yes I thought it was early for them too spingtime but could have sworn I heard young robins calling in someones garden on my way home from work this afternoon Had a nice surprise visit from a song thrush this morning too, never seen one in the garden before.

The robins have fledged today, I wasn't able to get a photo in the nest box I tried but due to the nest box being a triangular shape I wasn't able to get the angle right but we now have 4 new robins scattered about the garden so I'm pleased they have made it this far, fingers crossed they make it out safely, I have been doing my best to keep an eye on cats and magpies, had the water pistol at the ready lol. The starlings have pretty much finished their nest just waiting on the egg laying now which looks like it could be any day, and my bluetit has finally got a move on with the nest build, plenty of moss so far!

So pleased your robins fledged safely. Good luck with your starlings and bluetits too. I'm hoping I get a nest this year Thank you Sammi, just read your post regarding the great tits, fingers crossed for you, we have been in this house for nearly 8 years now and have only had one great tit nest, I believe it was the first year we moved in, they did nest rather late though I think it was in May sometime so could have been a second nest. The robin fledglings are still about being fed by dad, so good to see them flying about and acting like the adult birds already just need to grow their tails and get the familiar red breast! the female is going for a second brood in the same tree but a different box, she started to nest build today so it looks like round number 2 I haven't been posting much of the starlings of late as it is impossible to see in the box as they have piled a load of grasses and leaves up to the camera, they could have an egg in there even hopefully at some point they oblige and clear the vegetation, all my other nests haven't been like this, might just have a very clever pair that know they are being watched The bluetit still comes and goes adding to the nest but no lining yet, it's been a long drawn out process this year, I occasionally see the male go in and give her some food but I think he has a second lady somewhere too so if she doesn't crack on she'll be left behind I think this happened last year in this box, could even be the same female as she sat on her eggs but they never hatched, she was rather behind as there was already a nest of chicks I could hear in a box in one of my neighbours.

Hi Starling I wonder what it is about great tits. I think I've jinxed it by even mentioning mine. Nothing at all yesterday and a snail has climbed his way right to the top and is currently warming his huge foot on the lens . I did have a close up glimpse of a great tit in my side view box and he was a ringed bird I had spotted in the garden before. I was able to get a view of the rings and report it to the bto so got his ringing history which is lovely. Oh well at least they know the box is there Your starlings sound like they are not going to play up to the camera i really feel the weather is just not right for our birds but I think I remember saying that last year and seems they were just nesting somewhere else. The sparrows still come everyday and occasionally bring in a blade of dried grass and then usually this gets taken out again. I hope your bluetits spring into action when we finally get some spring.

I managed to glimpse two starling eggs today but she covered them before I could take a pic a pair of woodpigeons have also joined me in their nest building efforts in the top of the bay tree not sure how it's all going to pan out for them, we had this last year but they abandoned the nest before eggs were laid but will keep a close eye on proceedings as for the robins I have only checked the nest once a few days ago and there were no eggs although the pair are still about, will check it again once the coast is clear as the woodpigeons are above them! the bluetit still has a lovely cosy nest to look at with no eggs as far as I can see.

Finally got a glimpse of the starling eggs! the nest is a little off centre so whilst 3 can be seen I believe she has at least 4, the robins seem to have left my garden completely now after starting their second nest so think they have gone elsewhere. The woodpigeons have been building their nest non stop at the top of my bay tree and the bluetit is still hiding those eggs!

Was very surprised to see the starling eggs have hatched this morning! I wasn't able to track the start of incubation precisely as couldn't really see them but it was earlier than I thought, I will try to get a pic or two if they oblige at some point

The woodpigeons eggs have sadly been predated by the magpie, not completely unexpected but disappointing none the less the bluetit is still brooding and the starlings are going from strength to strength, I can hear them now I am still waiting to get a good pic of them!

We get numerous Wood Pigeons nest attempts in our front berry shrub that climbs up the front of our house. Out of the 7 nests built over the last 7 seasons only 2 fledged without the eggs being predated by our local Magpies. Yet our street has about 5 or 6 pairs. I understand they can try about half a dozen times building a new nest in a new site every time.
