Hi all I popped on just to see if anyone was around and I see Ann,Paul and Pete are already thinking of Spring 23 as I am. Our boxes are all in the same places and cleaned out ready. That feeling of expectation is already with me. Yesterday we made a huge decision regarding all the wires coming in as they have been coming through a hole Hubby drilled in the frame of our wooden window. The window is being replaced in the next few weeks so we had to decide whether we should just have the wires come through the open window (not an option in the cold)or to go for drilling a hole through the wall. So yesterday armed with a borrowed drill and bit we did it. Of course like all our DIY jobs it didn't quite go to plan but we have now got 5 cameras permanently wired through. So if the wall doesn't fall down we are set for 2023. We had a beautiful great tit check out the side view box and I've noticed a pair have been checking out all the boxes

Hi sammi Good luck for your season you sound well prepared Now that is a sight I would like to see in my side view box, I’ve taken the metal plate off the front in the hope it increases the chance of it being used I have five boxes in position I will be more than happy to get just one active nest 😊 I’ve noticed a blue tit visit one of my log boxes

Hello, I had my hubby do the same a few years ago, all wires coming through the wall. I hope your season is a success, lovely to see the the Great tit.

Well so far we have had a half hearted wriggle from one bue tit female. She has a bit of feather mite damage (I think) around her eyes which makes her recognizable. The temperature is so up and down though The sparrows are around but don't seem interested in the boxes this year. Early days but still exciting

Seems the weather is going to be unpredictable for a while yet which is miserable as can’t wait for some Spring weather and hopefully some birdie action for many. Looks promising for you Sammi. Sue

There has been some interest in my side view box. The box has been home to a fearless spider who has been capturing anything that dared enter. I think the bluetits had baited off camera and detached the dead and trussed wasp and bumblebee from the roof space They have been in and out poking the carcasses very carefully and then today the female eventually evicted the wasp. The Male looked a bit spooked by them

Well must mean they are interested in the box Sammi, otherwise they wouldn’t have chanced ousting them. Keeping everything crossed that things are looking up Sue

Thanks Sue. Yes this pair are checking out all their options. I can recognize the female at least as she's got that bit of feather loss around her eyes. Early days

Me too. Maybe they like the idea of a box with a bt of character There are other spotless, waspless boxes on offer

I love these kind of cute little moments we get to see with our various cameras.

The bumblebee has gone too this morning but before this sleepy head put the cameras on hoping today may bring some action

Honestly any action in the boxes is enough to get me excited. I have never had a great tit nesting and I have noticed more interest this year. But I must not get too excited. The sparrows don't seem interested in the box they have fought over in the past.

Thanks Sue. I had my hopes dashed a little today. We have a robins nest just opposite the back door deep in the ivy. I see them disappearing there on a regular basis. Then this morning a newish cat to the neighbourhood was peering over the wall right above the nest We shooed the cat away and today we learn she belongs to our new neighbours. Described as very friendly. I mentioned the nest but the reply was that she was a bit of a hunter killer. I'm not sure if this makes for good nesting territory

Well it's a start It's the same box they used last year so seems she has turned down the spider's box even after cleaning it up

Definitely a start Sammi 👍🏻🤞. Let’s hope that ‘friendly’ cat goes to visit other neighbours and stays away from your garden . A water canon might persuade it to try its luck elsewhere Sue

I had cats eyeing up my robin fledglings last year and definitely having a good go at grabbing them. And the same cats poop in my garden all the time!

Thanks Sue I do hope the nest progresses. Yes Pete sadly we have a few cats that love our garden because of the bird life. We gently persuade them not to linger long if we see them but one newcomer is a bit of an aerial acrobat. We will just have to be vigilant. Lovely cats but the ones we see spend more time here than at their homes I think
