just been looking in on the activity and I am certain one chick has died, there was one presumably the last one to hatch that was behind all the others, he hatched some 15 ours after the rest, so was on catch up all the way and he was so much smaller but did seem to be ok but just way less developed than the others. I know this happens frequently but I feel sad he got this far and didnt make it outside, I am not sure what mum will do with him, he is at the bottom of the cup right now, they due to fledge around Sunday/Monday

Oh Karen. It is horrible to see this and such a shame when they almost make it against the odds. My heart goes out to you. I have a couple of tiny ones that I will each feed to get the grub offered. When I've seen older chicks die in the past the parents always take the body out no matter what it takes Hope the rest go on to fledge. The weather here is awful today and it makes hunting down that food so much harder.

Oh, so sorry to hear Karen. Hope mum manages to get it out of the nest, but I know it can be a struggle when they are bigger. Fingers crossed for the rest.

They are so busy feeding I am not sure it has been noticed yet. Although she is still giving the nest cup a clean every so often so she may see it and perhaps remove or place to one side. Bless him he was so much smaller but I sat watching yesterday a while and he was getting fed quite a bit but obviously not enough.

Oh Karen this is so sad, especially as the little one had made it thus far. So so sorry for you. Watching nature can sometimes be a trial for us , but look how many are likely to fledge from your nest and the help you’ve given to the blue tit population. Wishing a really good outcome for the rest. Sue

Thanks everyone for your well wishes, she did manage to remove it, I didnt witness it but while walking down the garden path I saw him laying on the path, awe so fragile but so perfect but just not strong enough to contend, I laid him to rest in our wildflower garden

The remaining 7 are doing great, the parents are simply amazing, putting their chicks needs before anything else. They are getting very vocal now and investigating their home and siblings, love this stage in their development.

6.30 this morning five fledged within 10 minutes all safely flew up into the trees! Yay The two smaller ones left about half an hour later but their flying isnt very good, they have been in the garden on the ground in cover ever since the parents desperately trying to get them up and to follow them, but so far they havnt been able to fly up, they are in a bush at the moment in reasonably safe place but I o wish they could get up into the tree, I have been keeping an eye out for predators and chasing them when getting close, really hope they will be ok. Will the parents give up on them and concentrate on the others?

So pleased you had a successful fledging for most Karen. Shame about the little ones on the ground, sounds like you are doing a grand job watching out for predators. I don’t think the adults will give up on them. I have had parents hang around for days when little ones have not been ready to fly. They do seem to get well hidden and hop up in bushes to get a bit of height until they get brave enough or able to make that flight. Will keep everything crossed that they make it. Sue

Thanks sue, they are doing ok and seemed settled now, they have got up into a thick bush and the parents are feeding them quite regularly, I have just been out and stocked up on meal worms.

Awe thanks everyone, they are tucked in the bush still and are being fed really well so should be strong enough to take flight soon.
