A little worried tonight as Emma hasnt come in to roost also Dexter has been calling for her throughout the day and visited the box when she would be settling in to roost, poor boy looked inside hoping she would be in there, just hope she is ok but I am really worried something has happened to her will see what the morning brings

Oh Karen, so hope your fears are unfounded . We invest so much care into these little birds that they each become very special to us. Hopefully Emma will just turn up after a night off duty . I truly hope so. Sue

The fact he's been in to check seems positive as the nest is still 'on the radar' rather than having been abandoned...but still worrying her not turning up. Hope it's all ok!

Thank you all for your positive messages, Dexter has been around this morning I still haven't seen Emma. I haven't had the sensor on since yesterday morning, but the nest looks untouched from what I remember. Seeing Dexter looking for her is breaking my heart, your right sue, these little birds become our extended family and if they are hurt then so are we, just hope she appears as if nothing has happened

So Dexter has been calling for her for ages and going looking and coming back and calling, I noticed his body language change to flirty type flying in the tree and then a female appeared, I presume his calling drew attention and she came to check him out, it isnt Emma I am 99% sure, anyway Dexter turned on the charm and has got her in the nest several times now and she has been nest wriggling etc and checking the box out, it actually looks a lot like the female that came in a week ago while Emma was there, she is a bit scruffy looking compared to Emma so I can tell it isnt her. Still sad about Emma and I hope she is ok, but mayby this female is in need of a nest. I will put a video up.
EDIT~ She is now bringing in nesting material.

Oh my goodness Karen, not the outcome I was hoping for (nor you I assume). Maybe Emma didn’t like Dexters playing the field so to speak. I so hope Emma is ok and is having her own adventure but am pleased for you if this new female still gives you a little family to watch. Guess her name will be Gemma now in respect of Emma. Only kidding, of course you must choose a new name. Sad for Emma, but pleased for you Karen. Sue

Thanks sue, if harm has come to Emma then at least her hard work making this nest wasn't for nothing, its so sad though cause I know she was literally about to start laying, she was bringing loads of feathers in and I saw them both having nooky yesterday morning before she went awol. I really think this morning she would have laid her first egg anyway this female has a nest ready to go and will just have to see what happens, but right now she is making it her own and seems to be settling in, Gemma is a perfect name sue!

I hope Gemma has a successful nest and that Emma has found herself a new mate I do admire your ability to tell them apart. I am useless unless there is something obvious. Mind you I am awaiting cataract surgery

Thanks sammi, in this case it was easy to tell them apart not only in appearance but behaviour too, Gemma was clearly in an unfamiliar environment and acting quite cautious and inspecting the box whereas Emma was totally at home in her nest box and entered in a certain way, its amazing how they have their own little ways.

Quick update, still no Emma, but Gemma came into roost last night and continues to put her own stamp on the nest, she has added straw, moss and tennis ball fluff so far.

I know Sue, if she puts much more in there won't be room for anything!

Wow what with Sammi's double-built nest thing and your Emma/Gemma saga it's proving to be an eventful season. Really hope it goes well for you. Keep the clips coming!

Any eggs yet Karen - that is if you will ever be able to find them in that nest . So hope it doesn’t get any deeper. Sue

Gemma laid an egg! no picture as she has hidden it well, I'm guessing she did it very early this morning and went back to sleep as when I switched on she was asleep and I saw it when she moved as she woke up.
