I wasn't going to report on this one yet as it all happened so suddenly at the beginning of the week but I checked on the nest today and we have an egg! It's located in a berberis only about 3 foot off the ground in a homemade box that I created around 4 years ago, the first year it was up I was lucky enough to have the robins stay to rear their brood twice in succession just reusing the old nest, it was located in a maple tree about 4 foot up then. I have taken a photo but the egg is not visible as my phone is big and bulky and the box isn't very high so I was worried about damaging anything but will try to get one at some point! Fingers crossed all goes well with this one as the magpies are still about

Egg number 3 this morning didn't get a pic but could just about make it out, she is being very sneaky and placing them very close to the outer edge just under the opening so when you look in the nest looks empty!

Yes it's tense times! I imagine she will start brooding soon as they stop around 4-6 so I won't be invading her privacy much just keeping a watchful eye, will keep providing updates when I can, robins are just so vulnerable with their low down open nests but the magpie hasn't noticed so she must be doing something right!

The robin was in the nest brooding I presume on egg number 5 this morning so fingers crossed all goes well will keep you all updated, looking at a hatch date of around 23rd May.

As predicted the robin eggs did hatch yesterday, I saw one of the parents going in with food but I haven't managed to grab a pic yet, we have had some horrendous downpours here but will try to get one soon

Sad news to report something attempted to get at them last night and whilst it didn't succeed it damaged the nest enough to cause the parents to abandon them, I found them stone cold and gone this morning, there was 5.

Thanks guys it was quite a shock as it was all going well but I guess the extra activity of the parents gave the nest away, they were still feeding the night before at 9.30pm and it was getting dark, they feed quite late compared to other birds, I think this may have been their second brood as I am pretty sure I could hear young robins nearby at the start of the egg laying/brooding and it looks like the father was busy feeding those at the time so I guess all is not lost for the pair.

So sad that this has happened. When we watch nature I guess it’s inevitable that at times we have to see the horrid things as well as the good. So sorry for you. Hopefully you are right and they have had a successful brood elsewhere. Sue
