Oh no, this is heartbreaking. Can only wonder if pesticides used in gardens is being transmitted on the food being brought into the nests. So many seem to be dying this year and yet mealworms being ignored for a lot. So hope these last ones make it to fledging Sue

You have 100% my sympathies. Grim though it is I'm taking some slight comfort in knowing my brood's losses aren't unique. Let's cross our collective fingers and hope your three and my three go the whole way.

Well the three left today have consumed copious amounts of green caterpillars, we even got a bit of vigorous wing flapping from one of them this afternoon. I suspect these may have just been a bit too early as we didn't see many caterpillars coming in for the first week but they have really picked up today. I'm very matter of fact about it all, its nature these things happen. 9 would have been some going (considering how little help the mother has had with feeding even more so)...

Yep - not pleasant to watch close up, but we have to remember that this would all be happening whether we were watching or not. It's been a strange spring - incredibly dry - I am wondering if that might have something to do with it? Time-wise the birds seem about where they normally are, and it wasn't a particularly cold spring at all.

Such a difference in size and development between them... I don't think it will be too long before the big one makes a run for it...

Lets hope they both make it...

Well mum did not return to the nest overnight... the remaining small baby died in the morning... then the third one didn't hang around for anything, within 15 minutes with a bit of encouragement it jumped up and after 3 minutes of coaxing and mum and dad on the look out, went for it and cleared our garden into the adjoining fields... (WARNING - Video has dead bird in nest cup) 12 mins 30 secs jumps up and out by 15mins 40 secs. Mum watches on from above the nest Dad looking out from the garage and off we (it) goes..
