Hi all, I hope all your hogs are okay and fattening up for the winter. I seem to have a new visitor, it appeared about 5am this morning, went in the food house and then went without checking out the bedroom! I think it is the same one that has arrived this evening, it has eaten and currently asleep. It is smaller that my original hedgehog, who I haven’t seen for about 2 weeks. Here is the old one Here is the new visitor

Hi Amanda. Glad you are getting visits again. My regular ones have been absent for a good week, but been having visits from a new female recently and she spent several nights in the hog house, she hasnt been around for 4 nights now but a tiny Autumn juvenile has appeared and has naps in the hog house between feeds, I managed to weigh her last night after hours in the freeing cold, she is 315 grams so I think she may need the rescue centre.

Ahhh that’s Interesting to know Karen, it appears normal to have some go awol and new ones appear. I wonder where they are staying when they are not about. Do they have more than one home? The one last night visited all 3 houses. I hope Lola returns home soon!

Paul / Karen
Is it normal for a hog to feed during the day? Rudey (named by my daughter as it poops in the feeding box) did it once yesterday then went back to sleep. Rudey has been out to feed this morning too, but went back to sleep again He was busy collecting leaves overnight, there are quite a few in the box now.
edit:
The Hedgehog is out during the day Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, sleeping during the day and foraging for food late evening through to early morning. If they are out during the day there MAY be a problem. If it seems to have a purpose and is going somewhere, or has a mouthful of leaves, it is probably fine. Otherwise a hedgehog found out during daylight should be restrained in a box or cage, INDOORS, then call a rescue for advice.

Amanda, Out feeding in day is sign something is going on, The hedgehog looks like an hoglet, Judging by its size on video it won't be fit enough to hibernate without dying. If it wasn't out during day I'd tell you give it few weeks and weight it before letting it go a rescue. However on twitter lately with rescues I have been seeing alot of hogs dying after being brought in because being out in day people didn't know it was a problem. While it's staying in your hog house it be easy to get in box and take to a rescue, Most rescue give you it back if nothing is up after giving it a good check over.
I took one of mine last week to be kept in over winter because it was way to small, Its best to get it check out then leaving it to late and feeling bad if it dies. But hogs out in daytime even to eat isn't a very a good sign sadly 9 out of 10 times.
You are best off googling the local hedgehog rescue to you and giving them a call, If its an healthy hog you can pick it back up if its a sick hog it can get treatment in time.

Paul what did your hoglett weigh that you took into rescue.? Mine is 315g and the rescue centre said to carry on feeding her as we are and if the weather looks like it may turn cold then pop her in the garage or shed in a hutch to prevent it from hibernating and keep feeding her and then weigh her again in a few weeks.

Thank you for your advice. I have just emailed a local rescue centre and attached a link to the video. No answer on the landline, will keep trying. He was out for about 10 minutes, going from the sleeping house to the feeding house and straight back. He hasn’t been out since. I will keep a close eye on what he does. There is meat cat food, turkey and rice cat biscuits and spike food for him this evening. I hope the rescue centre will contact me this evening Thanks again Paul and Karen

300g Karen, They can try and hibernate at 450g but most aren't even successful, For best success need to be 500g or higher between 600g-800g is best for hibernation. I am glad I took it though, It looked perfect and was eating but it had a bacterial infection when checked out and if I didn't take it then she said it would of died within a week. Apparently the young babies get these bacterial infections easy during autumn that is why autumn babies don't stand a chance if underweight plus have something building up! Amanda, If the rescue say anything but bring it in they aren't a very good rescue so keep that in mind when you get a reply. Hedgehogs out in the day should always be taken and checked over, Any good rescue will suggest that. Let us know what happens fingers crossed for the little guy

I have emailed 2 different rescue centres and attached the video of it going to the feeding house and back to the sleeping house. This is my reply from lowermosswood wildlife hospital Im awaiting a reply from the other place. The hedgehog has just returned after a 2 hour wander, it has had something to eat and drink and has gone to sleep I will get searching to see for other rescue centres and contact them.

Hi Amanda, there seems to be so much conflicting advice about hedgehog care out there. My local centre said to me to keep an eye on it and continue what we are doing and weigh again in a couple of weeks to see its progress.I was sure they would take her in in the first instance. But I know being in captivity is also detrimental to their health, poor hogs have a really tough Dontno why they said if it comes out in the day there mayby something wrong, as you said it has been out for short periods in the day!

I know, there is lots of conflicting advice. I have contacted another place near Manchester, so I am waiting their reply. I have added that to this email that it wasn’t wandering around the garden, it went straight to the food house, spent the time presumably eating and went straight back to the sleeping box. I ordered a pair of weighing scales from amazon last night, so they will arrive today. At least I can see how much it weighs. When is the best time to do this? Fingers crossed, it won’t cont out today. I’ll keep you updated.

I weighed my little one one evening when it arrived to feed. I have to say I was reluctant to as I didnt want to scare it at all, but knew it was necessary, I gently picked her up when she was in the feeding station, used gardening gloves, tried not to make any noise and move to quickly so to make it as less stressful as possible. My scales decided to play up as I had been out in freeing temps waiting for her, but managed ok in the end.I gave her a quick visual check too for parasites etc then gently popped her back into the feeding station.I will weigh her again in a week or two to see how she is doing.

Thank you Yorkshire Lass. Thank you Karen for your info,
My hedgehog stayed in today and ventured out around 5.30, it had quite a lot to eat, had a wander around the garden and went back to sleep 20 minutes ago. I am now on standby to weigh it when it next goes into the feeding box. I didn’t want to weigh it on the first visit as I guess it would be hungry. I just hope I don’t frighten it off!
