Hi, From a previous thread, I decided that I would try and make a sideview bird box. I think I will manage to do it, I just need to sort out my mitre skills!! It doesn’t seem so easy using a jigsaw. All the woodworking equipment I have was my dads, and he passed away 14 years ago, so it old and somewhat knackered! I do appreciate my dad teaching me how to use all the tools when I was younger though. Okay, I have the back and front done and put a 28mm hole in the front. I may change that to 32mm, but I will need to buy the 32mm flat drill bit. The length of the wood needed for the front and back is 35cm and then the apex needs to be cut, chopping 45 degree angle on each corner. If you use a quick square, it is dead easy. I have cut the 26cm ramp wall. This is 26cm x 11cm with a mitre cut. I cut the 11cm x 11cm floor using this mitre cut too. I have cut the 15cm x 11cm right hand wall and finished it there as I was getting cold. Here are a few photos...... EDIT 1st April - Picture below is of the measurements, disclaimer that they are only rough measurements, depending on the thickness of the wood used.
Adjusting as building it is needed. Please see picture below.

I’m not sure they will be good enough to sell! The reason I made the first one is so I could make some at work. I work in a small day centre for people recovering mental health issues, so it is good for guys to have something to focus on, an achievement at the end product and a fantastic bonus if a bird nests! It will be an ongoing project...... so we may have made a few for next spring

Absolutely brilliant Amanda. You would have orders coming in thick and fast if you decided to market them. Fantastic job. yahoo_clap yahoo_clap Sue

Thanks guys
I haven’t done anymore on this, I am awaiting the arrival of a mitre saw which were being sold in Aldi. The mitre angles aren’t good enough with a jigsaw and a battered old workbench that wobbles around. I will have to learn how to use this mitre saw now 😬 I also want to make a hedgehog house as as ‘spike’ made his appear on Monday, I’ve not seeing him since November.
Paul, do you have the measurements for the roof of the side view please? ....thank you

Not to not-pick Paul, but just wondering where you are measuring from. Is it the outside, the inside, the longest edges? Makes a bit of difference with the mitred ends etc..

Measurements from outside Matt, Only way I can measure each piece of wood fully and see where they connect etc.
Natalie, Its cuprinol garden shades, waterbased weatherproof paint, Its got wax in so the rain pretty much bounces off it gives 6 years protection before needing another coat. Its in shade "Sliver Birch"

Matt, The first pic measurements, base and ramp wall are correct with the mitre. I will do the other cuts at the weekend now and then draw the measurements and post them up here. There are 2 different widths of wood. The front, back and the roof are approx 17cm. The internal walls are 11cm

Hi Paul
Sorry to be a pain, do you know the thickness of the internal walls please. I am guessing my wood is too thick. It is the 11cm width
Many thanks Amanda

Amanda, Do you mean the width of the inner back wall? Because that is 15cm the back wall and front wall alot bigger. Or do you mean the thickness of the "ramp" wall because that is alot smaller than 15cm That is actually 11cm so that would be same as yours now.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your reply, it is the thickness of the ramp wall please.
Edit My wood I have is too thick, which is making the measurements out to fit the front and back panels, so I am assuming at the the base and side walls are a thinner wood, for example 1 cm thick
I can still use the wood I have cut, it just makes the base smaller, I don’t think it should be too much of an issue as the nest will go up the ramp wall, like you said in a previous post. I don’t want that to happen on the one I will make with my new mitre saw.

Oh I see what you mean Amanda, I just measured the thickness of the wood for you and it is 2cm. If its not matching for you maybe I have got some of the measurements wrong with measuring it all outside I don't know You can always message Gardenature or call them and as for the proper measurements explain you are making your own and would like the measurements. Since you have already been a customer of theres I doubt they would have any issue with giving you them. gardenature.co.uk/contactSorry if I have f*cked it up for you with dodgy measurements, If you tell me exactly how you want it measured I can do it for you however I have just been measuring outside the box, Hopefully the less thick wood helps and it wasn't my fault

Oh no Paul, it’s not your fault, it is mine as my wood that is the wrong thickness. You have been a great help, thank you. The roof doesn’t matter but making sure the walls fit the front and back, the wood thickness has to be right (I think) It’s the base that I was struggling with. It is only an experiment, but I will make sure I can make one! I don’t think Garden nature would be too impressed it I asked them for the measurements, would they?

I’ve nearly finished it! I am going to put this on the side of my house on my garage wall.......hopefully the pair of blue tits that are chasing everything from my garden won’t see it! I have even bought a camera for it, which I wasn’t going to do That is coming on Monday! The paint is still wet on parts of the box
