in the Summer of 2015 I came across the BTO Cuckoo satellite tracking project and sponsored a bird named Larry who was caught and tagged at Stocks Reservoir, Forest of Bowland, Lancashire. I fly fish this beautiful reservoir every Spring for trout in or around the end of May and have often heard his call most Springs since. Larry is currently in Northern Congo having started his migration back to Stocks last month from Angola. This will be his 8th journey. He is getting old so fingers crossed he makes it. I find following these journeys amazing so thought I would share. Larrys Blog and mapsMain Cuckoo Tracking BTO Page for other tagged cuckoo's and sponsorship

Everything crossed here for him....lets hope it's just a technical thing. I looked at the links you posted....I'm thinking the gift idea is a great one ....maybe for my grandchildren ....but then I worried about the upset if the bird goes missing

I looked at the links you posted....I'm thinking the gift idea is a great one ....maybe for my grandchildren ....but then I worried about the upset if the bird goes missing I'm afraid that is inevitable Sammi with the thousands of miles of each migration trip. I was astounded that Larry made it back so many times. I had a strange attachment to this bird through hearing its call from my boat as I fished on gorgeous Spring days. Knowing it was Larry (they are very territorial) and how far he had travelled, for a stay for only 6 or 7 weeks to mate, always brought a smile to my face.

I can understand that Benn. It's incredible that they make the journey once let alone 8 times. I hope you hear a cuckoo calling when you are fishing this year.

Great news! Larry has reappeared!! Excerpt from BTO cuckoo tracking page: "Larry is back - 15 Mar 2019 Having not heard from Larry for the last four weeks we were beginning to wonder what had happened to him; well know we know. During the evening of 14 March he popped up in Guinea, almost 3,000km (2,000 miles) from his last known location in Congo. He is now further west than any of our tagged Cuckoos and currently in the Guinea Highlands to the southwest of the village of Boutoudou. He is now 5,000km (3,000 miles) from his breeding area in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire. He arrived back in the UK on 8 May in 2018 and on 4 May in 2017."

Great news!!!! This is an excerpt from yesterdays BTO cuckoo tracking site..... time to dust off my fly fishing gear!!!! "Lancashire Cuckoo Larry is home! We last heard from Larry on April 14 when he was in northern Algeria. An update received from Larry’s tag at 05:48 this morning showed that he had covered 2,035 Km (1,264 miles) and is now back at his breeding grounds in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire. Larry was tagged here in June 2015 so his successful return means he has now completed four full migration loops from Lancashire to his wintering grounds in Angola and back again. In completing each of his loops he covered approximately 16,000 Km (9,940 miles) so we have followed him over at least 64,000 Km (39,770 miles) – what a bird!"

Thanks all. I could not resist going on Tuesday as the weather on that morning was beautiful. So I set off at 6am but unfortunately I did not hear Larry. Perhaps he is waiting for some females to arrive before he starts to call. There were many other moorland birds, finches and waterfowl to listen to though and a caught a beautiful 4 lb rainbow trout that put up a great fight before I could bring it to the boat. I returned it to the water and watched it swim away. I don't like the earthy taste of trout!!!

Sad news. The BTO believe Larry has perished It was a pleasure hearing his call in Spring whilst I fished then tracking him around south west Africa in winter. Excerpt from BTO report: "Larry's last stop 06 Aug 2019 On 3 August we received a further location from Larry’s tag showing that he had not moved from his reported position, in northern Libya. Unfortunately, there’s no way he could have survived for that long in the arid conditions so we must conclude that he has perished there.
This is especially sad news as he was our longest surviving active Cuckoo, having been tagged in 2015 and entering his fifth year of tracking. "

Sorry to hear of Larry's demise. What an incredible achievement for these birds to make those journeys though.

Yes Paul, the tiny GPS tags have their mini own solar power panel. And yes Sammi like swallows martins and swifts they travel to the southern most regions of Africa to winter.
