I’m just having a look through some of the motion detects from today Is this the male on the floor? I have noticed that the first one in the box sort of lies down. The other blue tit is just coming in....is this normal? Many thanks

We have been having two at a time in our box that we can see. When the second BT hops in the first one hops out.

The bird bowing down is normally the behaviour of a male blue tit in the box, So very likely Amanda yes.

Thanks Paul and Twinkle for your replies. After such a busy day in the tree box yesterday, there has been minimal activity today, no more nesting material Both boxes have had visits and wriggles in each, but nothing since 10am. I am sure it is the same pair who are spending a lot of time in next doors box. I hope you have all had positive days and nesting is well under way.

I wouldn't worry to much Amanda, I got my first material brought in a week ago now and nothing added to it. Seem to only visit during mornings then don't see them all day. Wall to wall sunshine today here in Liverpool 17c and still no proper building, But the birds they know when its time to start, They can have a nest complete in days when they crack on. I wouldn't worry yet, Normally when we get to last week of April people with no nest lose hope. But anytime over the next 4 weeks still hope so don't worry.

Ahhhh, that has reassured me a bit I never really took too much notice when my old box was up, I knew it was active at that was good enough for me, I then used to hear the baby bird when the parents came back to feed them. I feel I’m becoming obsessed with bird boxes and blue tits

Hi Amanda This bird watching is very obsessive & very addictive. Things are looking good for you so far, you wait and see if you get a nest to watch, your nerves will be shot!!!!! Elle xx

I had this little one in the tree box for about 5 minutes today. I have had quite a bit of activity and double visits. I even think this is a new pair of blue tits...fingers crossed!
What does it mean when they stay in for a while? Sorry about all the questions, I don’t know being new to all this 🤔

Wow, that was a long visit Amanda! I've never had one do that - perhaps one of our more experienced members will know what is happening. Great picture quality on your video!

Could hear or smell a predator outside the box?

Normally when I have had long visits like this, They preen themselves and relax in the box. From the video it looks like he / she is looking out for something, It doesn't take its eyes off the nest hole. How did it enter the box? Was it normal and slow are jump in fast and go to the back?

Thanks for your replies, it does look frightened doesn’t it.
Here is it entering the box There is a loud sound that I think has frightened it. I didn’t have my sound on before.

From my experience he is waiting and looking out for his partner to come to the hole. However, in the first video he looks to have been spooked by that sound.
Great videos Amanda!

Strange one Amanda. Does look and sound as though listening to something outside so maybe just a bit wary of whatever. Be great if a new pair for you. Sue

Hi Amanda I’m with Benn on this one, I think it is defo listening to see if its partner is following or nearby, hence on first video, he’s listening and then crouches as if his partner is coming then maybe she goes by!! At least your getting visits which is a really good sign icon_biggrin Elle xx

I have just looked at a camera in the garden, the noise is a bird landing on the front of the box, it looks like another blue tit

This little chap, who is nesting in Nextdoors box is keeping the great tits out of my box! A great tit was taking an interest in my tree box, this one jumped in the box and the other blue tit chased the great tits off.

It will be because he runs yours and next doors garden Amanda, He will probably run a few gardens. My male blue tit is visiting a few of my boxes daily although he’s got nest going on with Tatty, He’s just making sure nobody else is around using them I guess does the same thing every year, But out of a blue tit and great tit the great tit normally wins the fights so still hope.
