Thanks all - yes Paul I think you could be right, it's also been warmer in the fens this last couple of days, so could start a general rush for moss!
Must try and think of names for my pair (haven't knowingly seen the male yet) now.

Wonderful news & piccies Beechnut so pleased for you! I didn't check in yesterday as I was gardening all day, but my good news is that whilst I was out there, I saw a couple of great tits, both of them going into the box at different times. One flew in, left & then the other one went in briefly (suppose he may be looking at what she'd done?!) Anyway, this morning standing at the kitchen sink, I saw them both sitting on my little tree, then repeat performances of the above, so now I'm hoping for a nest to continue my good luck of having one every year.

Thanks all and good luck to you Diane for a GT nest - there aren't too many of them posting on here (mostly BTs). I've gone for Tommy and Tuppence, not being that imaginative, and the wife frowning at all my other suggestions! Anyway Tuppence has been super busy again this morning bringing in the moss and the base of the box is almost covered, the sides are quite thick and a small space in the centre of the nest. There may have been an interloper in the box earlier (or it may have been Tommy), but she was quickly in and following a bit of a maul the first- comer beat a hasty retreat. Tommy has been in to give Tuppence a small winged insect while she was building, so everything seems to be quite normal.

Further good news then Beechnut & I like your chosen names. I realise you want a male name beginning with a T, but the first time I heard the name Tuppence was when I was 8 and a neighbour of ours named some kittens Penny & Tuppence - I liked cats in those days! They even named their resident frog Marmaduke & my Big Bruv & I always called every fly Horace! Ye gods, all these old memories you've reminded me of, so for that as well.

Tuppence has been really busy today - I would think the nest may well be completed on Saturday. Here she is bedded down for the night.

Hey you're welcome Diane anything that stirs beautiful memories is OK in my book.
Tommy and Tuppence are two fictional characters from Agatha Christie's pen, that first made their appearance in 1922. A little bit before our time eh Diane?

lovely beechnut, i am a fan of the greatit, i do have zak and zara, great tits that come regular to my feeders.the male is so stunning with his markings, but for a long time i have not seen evidence nest building around my garden, think they nest in the trees. we had a lovely family of them last spring, but both young gt and bt are no where to be seen for a long time now,

I've been lucky to a degree Ann, as I have had a GT nesting almost every year since I put my Wallbox up, which is probably 7 or 8 years. Before that I had a box in a cherry tree (still there) and in a pear tree (also still there). There have been occasional nests in the tree boxes, last year I had a late nesting (July) in the cherry and three or four years ago a nest in the pear tree, but I can't remember having more than one nest box occupied during the same period of time.
But every one has been a great tit pair - I would like to have BTs just for change one year, but I do love the GTs.

Have thought of that BTK, but I very rarely see BTs around my garden at any time of the year, so I'm rather loath to go that far and end up with nothing.

Tuppence is bringing in the fine stuff this morning, starting on the nest cup - so it shouldn't be long till egg laying.

Have thought of that BTK, but I very rarely see BTs around my garden at any time of the year, so I'm rather loath to go that far and end up with nothing. I had the opposite problem in Dublin, Ireland. All BT's never seen a GT ever for some reason. No Long tails either there. Had a very healthy House sparrow population, so I would have tried a nestbox like Paul's or a terrace nest setup.
