It could very well be Ann, it is very early for me though if it is, as last year my first Moss was only just brought in on the 9th April in my side view box. I think my first egg wasn’t laid last year until 28th April my hubby has just informed me we are going to have a cold snap coming this week, so maybe my birds know this as they have finished the nest but today was showing some really strange behaviour!! ‘Poppy’ (decided to call the female) was calling for Zorro, he came and fed her in the box on 3 separate occasions but then she stood up & they both looked at the nestcup, as if looking for an egg, then she had a go at him and he flew out. I really thought she’d started laying as this morning she seemed to be in and out a lot, but also sat waiting a lot!! Yet, haven’t seen her since about 1pm this afternoon when it actually started to come in a lot cooler, well I hope her absence is due to the weather Elle xx

Update on Poppy & Zorro..... Sue & Ann I have good news, looks like you were right Ann, I think Poppy could well have laid an egg this morning as she is roosting tonight , my bluetits only ever start roosting once egg laying has started so fingers crossed Zorro came in a couple of times to check things out today, but most of the day she was out, very few visits until 7.30 this evening. Zorro checking the home Poppy tucked up in bed Poppy testing the cup for size Elle xx

Well Poppy has been out all day with only a handful of visits with extra fluff/wadding, but home for bed at 7.35, bit nervous though after reading Kathy & Paul are questioning whether they have eggs Like Paul has mentioned in another post, Poppy is doing all the right things to say she has started laying, ie., covering the cup.! But who knows When she came in she did spend a good 5 mins just sat on the nest, as if she was warming the eggs, although she didn’t do any diving into the nest, which I did find strange!! We are definitely having a cold snap, but sun intermittently shinning, but still colder for this time of year. Elle xx

Thats what Tatty as been doing for around a 5 days now, Very limited visits during the day and when she does visit its just to add a feather or abit of wool. Then of a night before she roosts all her focus is on the cup fitting it etc, She is showing all signs she is laying but I don't actually know if she is or not. I mean my sparrow nest as been complete for nearly 2 weeks now she only started laying yesterday, It seems like this year its alot of nest being complete then waiting to lay an egg. Which is a good sign for late nesters who can complete a nest within 2 or 3 days and start laying straight away, So people like Matt, Karen,Pete, Amanda, Phil still have a little hope.

Well Paul, like your Tatty, Poppy has been out all day apart from a handful of visits to deposit more feathers, however she came in earlier tonight at 7.20, sat on nest for a couple of mins then started nose diving which I know from past means she has got eggs although i I didn’t see anything at that time. I have been watching her while she’s sleeping, then she woke up and adjusted the nest and I caught site of 2 eggs but I wasn’t sure whether I glimpsed a 3rd?? By rights there should be 3, as she started roosting on the 9th. She has kept the cup really well covered today though. weather is up & down all day, sunny & warm then next minute dull & cold, we are getting arctic blast at weekend so who knows what’s gonna happen, the temperature really drops in the evenings, thank heavens for central heating because I’m a right cold a..e!! She definitely seems to know what she’s doing though so I can relax a little Elle xx

I've only just read your news about Poppy laying two or possibly three eggs, so that's fantastic news Elle. The race is now on to see which one of you can report seeing first after all of your birds going on a go-slow with this warm then cold weather we're all having. I'm also doing that with the Peregrine Falcons at Wakefield, the one at Hull you told me about & guess what? My grandaughter is at Lincoln University & yesterday she gave me the link to a live stream on YouTube for the Lincoln Cathedral Peregrines!

Well folks, I haven’t got a clue what’s going on with Poppy I thought I’d seen a couple off eggs possibly a 3rd, but I’m not so sure now, Could it have been feathers ? Poppy is covering them so well if she has, instead of unveiling the eggs at bedtime and laying on them, I think she’s actually got a layer of feathers between her and the eggs, i can see what looks like silhouettes of eggs, this would make sense as it’s absolutely freezing here, so maybe it’s for extra warmth I did stay up until 3.30 last night to watch her when she wakes to change direction & to preen, but could only see the silhouettes, unlike the night when I was sure I’d seen crystal clear eggs Over last 2/3 days as temperature has dropped, she seems to be paying less visits back, probably reduced to 2 or 3 all day till bedtime. It should be egg no.7 as you say Ann, but who knows, will have to wait and see Her her nest up is top left corner, she even puts feathers up the back wall as if blocking any drafts Elle xx

Poppy obviously likes a cosy nest . Loving all the feathers. Probably eggs are all well hidden because of the weather. Look at Malcolm’s box, - couldn’t see any more than three eggs and then eleven were suddenly revealed. They are so good at covering them up. Am sure they are in there - somewhere. Sue

Elle - Like Ann says a cosy nest with all those feathers but all to play for, agree with the others about hidden eggs it's frustrating but they tend to that don't they keeping us guessing. no doubt all will be revealed when you next post.
