One of my boxes has quite a lot of black mould on the wood inside. Do you think this is an issue? pic:

Is this the one that was used last year Matt? I know sometimes based gets messy off nest but good clean normally gets it up. All my boxes are cedar wood and never had this problem, What wood are you using?

NO, this is a new one. They've all had a very slight bit of faded mold from when the wood was stored in the garage, but this one seems to have developed a bit more. Don't know why - perhaps I need to drill a few holes in the bottom for ventilation? Cedar is supposed to be good for mould/rot. These are made of birch.

Oh I see Matt, Its strange how its getting worse isn't it with being inside the box? Maybe putting some holes at bottom for extra air / drainage will help as you have said. Its worth a go isn't it.

Matt Yes, it could be a problem for the chicks although this must occur in the wild. My RSPB boxes have little cuts at each corner for drainage ventilation etc. As Paul said could you drill some small holes in the bottom? It might disappear though when the weather gets warmer.

Same here Kathy, All my gardenature boxes have 4 little cuts in corner and my sparrow box and new starling box (both from cj wildlife) have 4 small holes that was probably done with a drill. I would drill holes in bottom of all 3 your boxes 4 little holes in the base this will allow more air in and nearly every box as some kinda holes / openings on the base anyway.

Yeah I'll drill some holes. Last year's box had some gaps left around the bottom deliberately but these new ones maybe not so much, so a bit of extra ventilation won't hurt and it will be easy to do.
