Congratulations Ann glad to hear your have finally started to hatch. Sorry to hear about Martin though, you never know, he may still turn up, stranger things have happened . Does seem very suspicious that Jenny hasn’t been seen either, fingers crossed all goes well for Martha and chicks Elle xx

i was sat in the garden earlier and noticed another bluetit looking for insects on the rose bushes, i nearly leaped with joy, could it be Martin back. it flew away from the gardens, i wonder if this was Martins first wife, martha was around at the sametime so i defo knew it wasn't her

Ann, I can imagine how your heart jumped with anticipation. What a shame it wasn’t Martin. If that was his other wife it’s surprising you haven’t also seen him about. . Sue

Sounds like Martha is doing a better job than mine Ann. Bit worried as things seem to have slowed down a bit today, hope it’s just my imagination but doesn’t seem to me that dad is turning up as much . This is when not having a camera is SO frustrating. Sue

Sue lets hope you are wrong and the both will be around more tomorrow i would love to know how many martha is feeding, thats the disadvantage of not having a camera, math seems to been finding plenty of food in the trees and going in the ground feeder to take crumbed suet ball back to nest.

You both need Paul and Delilah to visit your gardens and open your boxes and take photos lol2 icon_biggrin

You are so right Helen, we do need someone or something to give us a clue Ann, I hope Martha isn’t taking the crumbed suet for the chicks!! At this age they need live foods to get the moisture that they need so hope Martha realises to eat the suet herself, but i’m Sure you know this already. We need a dental mirror to see what’s going on Ann. Sue ps Ann, sounds like Helens female is feeding some suet as well so maybe it’s ok - hope so anyway

Hi Sue she is getting caterpillars ect from the trees, i do see her go to suet, then to the box so does that mean she and young will be having suet. im not sure if im doing right but she collects it and takes it back to nest
jenny wren is back today, she's been in and out a few times, i wouldn't say it was for feeding, im just amazed to see her back if it is her and not him not seen any movement there for ages

How do any of us know if we’re doing right Ann, we can only try. Do you think Jenny wren has been incubating? Great to see her back whatever. Still a bit unsure what’s going on in mine Not physically seen the male for 24 hours but been out most of today so could have missed him. Been sat here for the last hour though and only seen the female. Even she is only doing about five trips in the hour and am sure that isn’t enough. How often is your female in and out Ann? Wouldn’t it be lovely to just have a straightforward couple in a camera box and not have to second guess everything. Sue

sue yes it would be good to see the pr feeding them and have a camera we can live in hope for next season. i couldn't say number per hour, but i do know she keeps busy all day. no knowing about the wren ive seen her about 4 times this afternoon, but it didn't seem like she was going in to fed more of a break i must keep looking again now she is about, i hadn't seen anything going on there for a good while it would be lovely to see both bluetits back and forth and a camera to answer our questions of how many chicks i just sat and watched Martha she did 4 visits about a min in between each one what i do with the dry mealworm, i wet them with water to fluff them up and they go in the ground feeder the robin enjoys them

Ann, if Martha has a small number of chicks then maybe she wouldn’t need to do a lot of food runs, like I told Sue last year (I think it was last year) my brother in law gave me a mirror (like a dental mirror) to look through the hole, that might be a good idea, just to see how many chicks there are Elle xx

It worked for me when I needed it Ann, my brother in law is a plumber, and it was he who gave me this mirror a few years ago. Give it a go Ann Elle xx

Hope all still going well for you Ann? Did you get to spy with a dental mirror? Martha sounds like a trouper - good on her yahoo_clap . Do keep us updated and hope you see them fledging when the time comes. Sue

Not feeling happy as when hubby called me down this morning our cat was playing with a chick. managed to get the chick back into the box. don't know if it was the same one but turned around and cat after a chick, it happened a third time so got the cat indoors. Spent time checking outdoor cam to see what had been happening. Parent was still going back to box. It was feeding a chick that was looking out of box. when i turned my back but looked at vid after, it flew out again. Straight to the ground. Certainly not strong enough. So not sure if it was the same one. Used the spy camera and saw it on its own in the box, flies in abundance. This last time it came out went between two sheds where i cannot get it so now its on its own. Can see parent on bush feeding but don't know if it can hear chick. It just checked box then flew away. I did see a chick fly over to next doors garden so i don' know how that one fared. We will have to eventually clean out box. Parent is still coming back and looking in. Weather getting cloudy so will have to go in soon Back tomorrow after work and will catch up on all the fledging.

Sometimes the chicks do end up on the ground Twinkle. I have had this happen a few times over the years. The parents are very good at finding them and the chicks seem to know to ‘hide’ in bushes etc, or at least this is what has happened at mine in the past. The chick will keep calling and hopefully the parents find it before the cat does. Sometimes they take a few attempts before they get airborne. If possible would be a good idea to keep cat in for a few hours at least to give it a chance. Sue

My apologies Ann I have missed so many posts I am having to catch up slowly. Fat is okay for baby birds if it is part of an overall insect diet. My BT's usually start to introduce it close to fledging. However, in the early years before I put out live food it was on some occasions the only thing coming into the nest which isn't good. Hope it is the former with your nest. Not sure if it is good for Wrens though?

Parent returned a few times looking into box. Tonight will check to see if other box its still being used overnight. Much easier with a cam in the box.

Kathy ive only ever seen the wren pick up seeds from my pots( Violias,) and search around the edge of the garden, she is now going over to the trees for food, but not ever seen a wren on or near any feeders ever. im still not sure what stage she is at, im not here all the time so ive only seen her occasionally pop in and out so i need to look out now im home
