I built my latest box with a clear twin wall polycarbonate roof to give maximum light for the camera. I’ve put ‘windows’ in the side walls of other boxes and birds have nested in previous years. However I’m beginning to wonder if too much light in the new box is putting off potential nesters. I haven’t yet got any takers. Does anyone have any experience of/ideas about this? TIA

One of my boxes which has been used two years in a row now was always quite dark inside been on the brightest of days so this year I decided to put two windows in the roof it is a pitched roof type. Ten I covered it with perspex, it has greatly improved the quality of the images and so far the bird dont seem fussed at all. But they only holes about an inch or so round I am not sure about a fully clear roof, if a predator sees inside it may put them off, but anyway good luck.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I did wonder about predators being seen, also the movement of trees causing shadow movement inside, so I’ve fixed a sheet of wood about 2” over the box. There still seems to be a lot of light but should cut out movement above. Fingers crossed!

Don't know about big windows, but lights inside don't seem to bother them at all. A lot of us here are running some sort of LED illumination to get a better picture, and certainly for bluetits this doesn't seem to be a problem. It's also pretty common to have some sort of window in the side of a box, but I must admit I've never seen one with a fully transparent roof - good idea, but wouldn't really work for me as I have all my camera gear in the "loft space".

I suppose that’s true re LED illumination, hadn’t thought of that. They keep looking through the hole, just never dropping fully in to suss out the space. I’ll just have to be patient. Cheers

I have blue tits building a nest in a box I put up last year with a camera in it and LED lamp - it replaced a much smaller box that didn't have either. Last year all I got were fleeting single visits and heads popping in for a quick look. No nesting. A great tit eventually started using it to roost overnight from mid July. So I think maybe new boxes might need a bit of time for local birds to get used to before they commit.

You may be right, only time will tell. Hope not though!
