Good heavens Paul - I haven't managed to check in for a few days & in my absence all hell has broken loose with your sparrow family! Those poor little birds being attacked so viciously by a female thug sparrow & such sad photos of them both - thank goodness yet again you lived up to your second name of "Knight in shining armour! Wonderful that your faith in the male sparrows is lived up to, as their dad did try his best to defend them. It's no wonder that the worse injured one looks up to you like that, a surrogate father rescuing them, feeding & caring for them - at great sacrifice as well - doing without proper sleep & still carrying on for several more days. Anyway, get in as many cat-naps as you can & I'm sure your zombie look will disappear very quickly after a couple of 'proper' sleeps. Good luck to you & the chicks.

Thank you everyone in regards to the sparrow comments! Here's a little video update of my blue tits, All 7 doing great. Tatty is still relying 100% on the waxworms and mealworms and using the scott feeder, The male on the other hand is bringing all natural food in. Nice balance for the chicks though of natural and live food. I'll be ringing these on Sunday, Baby blue colour rings this year.

Next week Elle, Alot of baby sparrows coming to the feeders now so perfect timing. Here's a little video of one of them feeding off me while am holding it, The amount of trust they have built up with me in just a small space of time is incredible. I am so pleased I didn't end up going rescue centre with them, Its hard work on the sleep side of things when you work nights etc but its so rewarding for me. Here's a little video anyway

Two sparrows as pets I am going to ring them next week, So I can tell them apart from other sparrows. I think its me getting attached to them but I mean how can you not fall in love with them? I'm just glad they have warmed to me and a have a little bond with me, I'll be expecting them to come and visit me daily or I won't be happy! I am just glad this is turning into a success story, They have a second chance at life and I am over the moon I give them that. Thank you both for the lovely comments, I know alot people let nature be nature but look at this outcome by helping. x

So cute Paul, hope they sense ‘the love’ and thrive. You’ve probably answered this loads of times before, but do you get any of your previously ringed birds back the following years?

Mainly during winter Helen, Last year during autumn we had a orange ring (2017) and purple ring (2016) on the feeders. I have also had a white ring (2016) and green ring (2016) checking out my boxes in past years during spring. 2016 was the year i had the 3 blue tit nests so had alot of different colour rings fledge that year! But never had one nest, It will happen one day I hope! But nice to see them pop back up during winter and see some still around.

I have never seen such a wonderful sight of a human holding such a trusting, baby sparrow so gently & feeding it you can be so proud of yourself Paul! Of course you're attached to them & although I hope they manage for themselves next week when you & your heart have to let go of them - I really hope they will still & always be attached to you.

Sad news, We have lost two blue tits chicks overnight / this morning I don't know what's gone on, They're getting well fed and was perfectly fine lastnight at sleep time. I was going to ring the birds today but I am holding it off until tomorrow or Tuesday now. I don't know what happened, I woke up to only 5 chicks in the nest box, So I am guessing two died overnight or first thing this morning! But how? Nothing could of got into the box and if they did am sure all 7 would of been dead. Box hole is only 28mm aswell, So no bigger birds can even enter the box sparrows etc. I'll be watching my nest box closely, I honestly can't wait for this season to come to an end. I have never said that before about a season but this one as been rough! Its been drama after drama P.s sparrows have started egg laying.

I've just read your message on Sue's thread about losing two of your chicks Paul - as I've mentioned there, this is turning out to be a horrible year ..... yes, you're right .... a lot of stress and upset this year & when the season is over it will be better for everyone.

More sad news The sparrow with the bad head passed away, I noticed today during feeding he / she wasn't as active looked very sleepy. But it passed away before, I am a grown man and cried like a baby I have got so attached to them, This one more so because the awful thing it went through. I can only guess its bad head as made it weaker than the other one who is very active and lively and always jumping about/ flying. (He / she is the one from the video) I am beyond gutted, I am going to put a ring on the remaining sparrow and let it fledged this coming week. I am over 2019 season at this point, Let it fucking be over I say. Never had season with problem after problem now heartbreak, May 19th is a shit day!

Sorry about your two chicks Paul. As you say this has been a piggin year. A lot of people’s numbers seem to be down. This is the only year we have had two attentive parents who actually both use the mealworms and a good size clutch only to be spoilt by a rubbish nest. Out of 9 eggs we have three. One year perhaps everything will go to plan.

So so sorry Paul. We get so much joy from our birds but then the losses are so hard to take. I will be hoping and praying the other little sparrow will fledge next week. You could have done no more. Sometimes I wonder if we are all better off not knowing what's going on.

Paul, I have cried for you and with you .you have tried so very hard for all your birds and I am really gutted that this has happened for you. At least you showed that dear little sparrow love and kindness before it’s demise. Hopefully the other little one that you have lovingly saved will go on to have a long and happy life all thanks to your efforts. You should be very proud of yourself. as for what is happening to the blue tits, it seems like anyone’s guess this year. It’s a dreadful year for so many of us. I am not known to swear a lot but I totally agree with your statement re the 2019 season. Big hugs from me . You do the birdie world proud, wish there were more people like you in this world Paul. Thank you for understanding how upsetting it can get, Pleased to say the remaining one is doing great, He / she is now in our old parrot cage with natural tree branches etc from the garden. Also feeding itself now from a bowl, I have bowl of mealworms/sunflower hearts and a bowl of water. I ringed it today white ring and here's some pictures, Such a lovely little bird minus the bald patch on its head that killer sparrow done
