Thanks Sue, yes, I'm really pleased at their progress. Another 6(ish)days then I'll have empty nest syndrome. Where does the time go? Guess I will fill the time in with work 🤔

Chicks all looking good, they've been well fed by Sandy. Last night she didn't sleep in the box for the first time, 19 days is Tuesday, which is when I think they'll fledge. They may catch me out and go tomorrow though?

Supposed to be fledging day today. I've been glued to the TV all morning, they keep looking as if they will go, then settle back down again. Sandy is feeding them too much I guess ;-). They do look ready to go though, fingers crossed.

Taz what's your secret to getting a nest so quickly? Any info on the type of box you've put up and whereabouts, I would really love to know. I guess ultimately it depends on so many external factors!

Hi Pete. Your guess is as good as mine really. The last 10 years my box has been in more or less the same place. A tree with the box facing east. The last 2 years we have had nests, but this was following 4 unsuccessful years with no takers. This has been the fastest nest build we have had. because of the problems with cats over the last two years, we weren't even going to put the box up. With a pair of great tits regularly visiting we put a box up on a standalone fence post, again facing east. They practically built the nest the next day. Hope this helps, just luck I think.

All 6 chicks fledged today. One of them had a grossly deformed foot and really struggled to stay on a perch. Eventually she managed it and they all flew off into nearby woods. 3 fledged together about 10 past 8 this morning, the other 3 went just before 2.
Now I have an empty nest 😭 🐤🐤🐤🐤🐤🐤

Don’t know how I missed this post Taz sorry. So pleased the fledge was successful. Shame about the poor little one with the deformed foot but hopefully he will adapt and learn his own way of using it. (I’m saying ‘he’ and I noticed you said ‘she’, one of us must be right ). Hope you see them around the garden for a while and you can spoil the little poorly one for a bit longer. Empty nest syndrome now Taz - I seem to have them all year Sue

Taz, thanks for the good news that they all fledged successfully & although they flew off into the wood perhaps they may visit your garden again . Empty nest syndrome now for you but you're another one who has had success this year.

Thanks Sue and YorksherLass,
Yes,it's been very quiet without them. Sandy is coming back quite frequently to top up on the mealworms. She's a busy girl so I'm guessing there are still quite a few chicks out there.
I did call the one with deformed leg a she because her cap was lighter than the others. It was a 50:50 split, 3 chicks had very black caps and 3 were quite a lot paler. I'm not sure if it's correct, but just assumed that was the difference 🤷.Nice theory 😂

Myself and hubby were sitting out in the garden the other day, heard a lot of commotion /young chicks twittering away. Looked like a load of blue tits had just fledged. They were all over the place with their clumsy flying. Then one chick came towards us and landed on hubby's head. I had a little chat with it for a good few minutes before it flew off. What a treat that was, really shame I didn't have my camera 😊❤️

Sue Thanks Sue, yes it was fantastic. A moment I will remember for a very long time. The colour of the chick was so beautiful, I was chatting to it and it seemed to be replying. Yes, we both thought it may poop, luckily not though.

Fabulous Taz! The day after mine fledged, the chicks were up in a nearby (small) tree, and one flopped out and landed on my hand, very very briefly - but still a great moment!
