Hi 78, loving the starling videos, keep them coming. Only just catching up this season so bit late is saying welcome. Looks like you have the same magic touch with birds as our Paul has. Going to be an interesting watch, Sue

Looking forward to seeing the 5 little baby starlings Iโm presuming you donโt have cameras in the other 2 boxes?. Wonder what happened the egg that fell out of nest, mouse/rat/squirrel ?

Thanks all! unfortunately I don't have cameras in the other two boxes so not quite sure what is happening with those but there are definitely nests in them, as for the smashed egg I did read about starlings being brood parasites so it is likely due to the lack of nest space here another female laid an egg in the tree box and took one out so it all adds up! can't be sure of course without witnessing it, we do get wood mice and have seen the occasional rat but very rarely get squirrels here in the garden, may have seen one in the 5 years we have been here but for some reason they just don't come into the gardens, although I often see them in the playing fields just round the corner!

Looks like it's going to be just the 2 chicks for this pair, took this vid 2 days ago, still seems like there is only 2 chicks today but with poor lighting in the box can't be 100% will see what I can get tomorrow!

Ok some developments here! starling box on house still has two chicks growing stronger everyday the starling box in the tree is no more not quite sure what happened but we found another smashed egg on our roof with a baby inside and the nest is no longer being visited by any birds. The one at the front of the house is still good, can hear the young and see parents go back and forth, they are older than the nest being observed at the back, sounds like there is more than two also in response to Sammi it looks like the parents are feeding them mainly crane fly larvae but have also seen various flies and other bugs. Now something else has happened, just yesterday a pair of bluetits have claimed my front garden box and have been furiously building, nest more or less 2/3rds finished already, not going to count my chickens just yet because neighbours have boxes too and they have been checking those out but completely unexpected for me especially so late in the year, will update if things look more serious in the coming days but this nest box is in a relatively high traffic area and is close to my front door so we have to be quiet!

Wow, nature is both great and cruel at the same time. I guess only cruel to us humans though, because the starling eggs I guess were food for something else?
Glad to hear the other two starling boxes are still going strong, fingers crossed the Bluetits nest ๐ค

Sad news about the tree nest. Gosh your bluetits have given me a glimmer of hope that it's not too late. I hope it does well My son would have loved your starlings as he had a massive infestation of leather jackets in his newly laid lawn. Literally they were swarming over the patio

No further action in the bluetit nest today though they had a fleeting look throughout the day, I believe this is a second pair in the area and the resident pair that are nesting elsewhere are trying their best to chase them out the area as saw four of them flitting about today! so this may not be A crow came yesterday and took the little dead chick off our roof so definitely food for others as you say Taz, I also saw a magpie today eyeing up the starling box we are watching, the youngsters are making a racket now! I am sure there is no access for the magpie though thankfully Yes Sammi I shall send the starlings to you when they fledge, I'm sure they will love your sons garden Oh another thing I have an allotment plot 5 minutes walk from my house and I placed a box in the apple tree there a couple of months ago, there is now a family of great tits in residence! I didn't know what stage they were at as no camera but today I was there and saw an adult go in and heard the chicks cheeping, they still sound rather young so probably a few days old or so but rather happy about that next time I am there will see if I can get a pic of the adult at the box discreetly, they were rather good at ignoring me digging a few feet below the box and just came and went without much care.

Wow, they look healthy enough. We don't get a lot of starlings in the garden. Occasionally a group of 3 or 6 visit. They did nest a couple of years ago on a house opposite mine. Great video.

An update for you all the 2 starling chicks are continuing to grow and do well as are the chicks at the front of the house by the sounds of it! the bluetits are still about but have only made fleeting visits to the box they nearly completed a nest around a week ago so suspect they are nesting elsewhere by now. There appears to be a sparrow nest somewhere as there is a male sparrow chirruping loudly nearby, it sounds as if it is coming from the tree the starling box is in so maybe they were the culprits of the nest being destroyed? will watch closely and report back! Starling chicks from today

Lovely to hear that are doing well. Yes, those sparrows can be ruthless. Hopefully the starling chicks are to big for the sparrows to be a problem?
