It's looking like another quiet year this year. 2019 and 2020 saw no nests, still hopeful this year is different. I'm really not sure what has changed to cause such a drop off in activity. There is about one BT or GT visit per day, but they never get the courage to enter the box.
No changes in the box itself this year, all the electronics are working well now. Typical :-)

Welcome back Phil! Still early, so plenty of time - at least that is what I keep telling myself! Maybe time to diversify a bit and target some other species as well for next year?

Thanks all!
I was planning to put up a second box on the other side of the garden, I think it's far enough away that they wouldn't bother with each other. Then the event happened and I haven't been able to get into the shop for materials. Hopefully that'll change soon!

It's an interesting question as to whether or not adding another box to target blue/great tits actually increases your chance of getting a nest, and by how much. I did the same a few years ago, and by last year I had ended up with 5 blue/great tit boxes (28mm hole) and still no nest! What happened was that the local male did the rounds of all of them, and even brought his lady friend to a couple, but ended up nesting elsewhere (I am almost certain in the neighbour opposite's nest box). The problem is that bluetits are very territorial, and that territory might cover quite a few gardens. Your new box might be more appealing generally, so it might get used (as might the old one), but my feeling is that putting an extra box up certainly doesn't double your chances. Hence my pivot this year to try and tempt a few other species (sparrows and/or starlings), which still hasn't worked (yet!), but has resulted in loads of visits so far from both of those species. After seeing Pete's success with a robin this year, I'll work a bit harder on that as well next year (did put one up as an afterthought quite recently, but no robin..). Having said all that, Paul does usually get multiple bluetit nests, but I believe that is usually a single male + multiple females.

Yes Matt that is correct, Its always been 1 male with different females! The most blue tit nests I have had in the garden was 2016, 3 females 1 male and two of them nested on the same wall only 10 / 12 feet apart without any fighting at all. I remember that year well because I had my sparrows and 2 blue tits all on the same house wall literally feet away from eachother and none of them bothered eachother! I think having more boxes only works if your male gets more than 1 female, At the moment mines got 2 that I know of so i'll see how this year plans out.

I’ve had the same kind of thing for the past month - just a brief head popping in once or twice a day. So frustrating!
