A Question for Pete
Lots of activity in our garden today by sparrows who do nest in our eaves every year, blackbirds diving in and out of the ivy & the robin did still make a pig of itself on the fat balls. Yesterday, after managing to do a bit of weeding & digging up about 5 worms, I put them in a shallow dish near the fat balls, went & sat down & about 5 minutes later the robin came out of the Red Robin bush & after inspecting the dish sitting on the rim - it proceeded to take the first one straight back into the bush. After about one minute it took another one & over about 6 minutes the lot was gone! I don't know whether it's a female or a male but it does have a red breast. Going out this afternoon to do more weeding & worm collecting.

It could be two robins that you are seeing taking the worms hard to tell apart the sexes, from looking at my two robins i think the male is a little larger, was this the answer you wanted? Do you think the robins are nesting in that bush?

Hi everyone did'nt manage to post yesterday was rather busy, im afraid something happened to the robins nest last night its not a complete disaster but this is it. I left the computer to do dinner at about 7.00pm and she was in the nest so i think full incubation had begun but when i came up to bed about 11.00 looked at the screen no robin in the nest' now the only thing i can think happened is that she got spooked out of the nest by a mouse, im just wandering weather the eggs are now spoil. She arrived back in the nest this morning about 7.30 and she laid another egg, i'm not sure i can do anything to keep the mice away from the nest but if anyone has got any suggestions that would be good. I'll post a couple of vids later today.

Thanks Ann, Those bloody mice just when you think you've got rid of them they turn up again, might just have to let nature take its course.

Oh heck Pete, what a disaster! I'm so sorry to read this news of yours but at least one consolation is that she is still alive & that would have been even worse news. I can't help with your problem of how to deal with the mouse, luckily I don't have that problem here as there are too many cats about - they are my problem with my frogs & froglets as they kill them. Thanks for answering my question, but I've only seen one robin - the one who took the worms is the same one who scoffs the fat balls all the time & dives into the bush again to digest them I suppose, before coming back out again for another scoff! It's a huge thick bush & there may be a nest in it but I daren't move any branches to have a look as I'm terrified of any bird flying out! I put a few photos of our garden in a thread on here, so will find the relevant one to show you.

Hi again Pete, it's easier for me to give you the link - not too long a thread.

Cheers Diane, yeah i think i'm gonna just have to let it be and see what happens. Ok Diane, you never know they might have a nest in there and she's incubating like mine and hes taking the food to her.

The "Boring" stage of sitting for her now Pete, They must get so bored these little birds, After being so active! Then again once chicks arrive they're none stop so probably enjoy it!

Yes Paul, she doze's off quite a lot until the sparrows wake her up, although she was out the nest for 3hrs this morning which i thought was a bit long, although it has been a lovely day down here, quite warm.

Thats interesting Paul, i think i've heard or seen on the telly that birds can delay the hatching of the eggs perhaps thats how they do it by spending a bit more time off the eggs i'm guessing weather permitting. My GT has started bringing in nest material today i'll post an end of a day vid.

So pleased things are underway with the GT'S. Looking forward to seeing those robin chicks. I think the nest in our garden must be on about the same timeline as I don't see much activity.
