Had an interesting visit yesterday... the female Kate came to the box at 16.35 which is about an hour or so before her usual roosting time so thought it would be a quick check then go and come back at roosting time, but no for over an hour she looked around the box, did some cleaning, scurried around the floor from corner to corner, spent a little time peering outside, then when it got to her usual roosting time she started preening them settled down to sleep. Not sure where Hastings was as I wasnt home to watch but I left the camera running when I left for work and saw this footage when I got home was interesting to watch her.

Fingers crossed, but Hastings I feel is on the side of the neighbours box he keeps fluttering/gliding over from our tree to theirs and going down to the box and calling her, but then he will come back over to ours

Luckily its the female who picks Karen, If she is showing more interest in your box it shouldn't matter!

We had a beautiful Spring day yesterday temps up to 16c but not one visit and so far none today either, but this time around I am not as bothered by that as last year around now the same happened after tons of visits and promising signs the visits just more or less just stopped to the point after a few weeks I switched the camera off, only thing different this year I have a rooster . They still come and feed and hang around in the tree. Then out of no where April 12th last year material started coming in, so fingers crossed its a repeat off last year

Friday seemed to be "the day" here, when the sun came out, the wind dropped, and everywhere I could see pairs of birds flying around and hear them singing. It was also the day my box visits dropped from 5-10 per day over the previous week to a big fat zero. I know the sparrows and starlings are nesting now (some of them, at least), because I have seen them building. I haven't actually seen any evidence of the bluetits building yet, but I'm keeping an eye out. My only nest (3 years ago now!) started second week of April, too. I still don't really know if that is just when they start around here, or if they were late starters/second female/disturbed from a previous nest, or what. I must admit my confidence in getting a nest this year dropped from about 8/10 on Thursday to about by 2/10 today!! (2/10 is generous, btw). Hope I'm wrong, and I really hope you get a nest as well. What Pete said is right, though - still having a rooster must count for something.

My two nests both started mid April but I am quite a ways North from you, but I wouldnt give up hope till end of April. The lack of visits are frustrating but I think it seems normal, I think they possibly have chosen their sites and are now just waiting for the right conditions before they begin building. I hope you get a nest to watch of your own, I'm confident you will after all the visits Roll on April

I hope you get a nest to watch of your own, I'm confident you will after all the visits Roll on April I hope you are right, Karen! I must admit I am increasingly looking back on the late start to my only nest (8th April) as a bit of an anomoly - maybe from a displaced nest, or a second female? But maybe they do just start a bit later near me, hard to say until I see a bluetit flying around with nesting material! I can say with some certaintly that the starlings and sparrows have started, so my backup plans are out the window - it is now bluetit or bust! As you say, won't give up hope for another month or so, but I can't say I really enjoy watching empty boxes at the moment as hope slowly fades away. I didn't enjoy it last year, either, which does make me wonder whether to try again next year - I should be full of the joys of spring when watching a sparrow foraging for nesting material, intstead I just feel peed off that they didn't use my box!!

Totally understand you feeling like that Matt after all the effort you have put in to provide for the birds, but all the visits from Tony and Elvira is positive and they maybe just waiting now to get cracking when the time is right, its another quiet day here no visits to the tree box again, Hastings has been up in the tree singing once or twice but thats all. But like I said this is what happened last year but they came back and started building! Im not sure about Sparrows and Starlings though. They may still use your box as they have many broods in a year. Do you still have the Swift box up Matt?
