Beautiful pic in the side view box. Fingers crossed they choose that one but I'm not sure how much work you'll get done from your office

WoW Matt......2021 is looking promising for you! I’ve just had a scan through your thread, I will have a read properly tomorrow. I’m intrigued with your boxes, have you made the concrete boxes yourself?

You can read more about it on the concrete nestbox thread here

Many visits happening in your boxes Matt? I know January is a busy month for you.

Nothing since that very busy day a couple of days back. I find visits to be incredibly weather dependent here - if it is raining or windy, or especially both, they seem to disappear completely. Is that the same for everyone? I kind of "know" in the morning if it will be a busy day, just from lack of wind and rain. Also, I never, or very rarely, see a visit after midday. Always the morning for me.. Having said all that, others on here seem to still be getting visits! Perhaps you are having better weather? Really breezy here today and was raining most of the morning, although it is sunny now.

That is pretty much the norm for them I think Matt, Well it is here aswell! I have always noticed that 95% the visits are before mid-day, Isn't that strange though? Its even the same in regards to nest building, At the start that only happens during the morning it isn't until things get serious activity increases through the day.
Can't believe its February on Monday though, It really isn't long now before it all kicks off!

Same here Matt, very few if any visits to the boxes if wet and windy, but on a clear calm day they are very busy right up till midday, with the odd look in the afternoon mayby.

Thanks Tommy! Lots of visits this morning, as it wasn't raining and it wasn't windy. I think that is about to change again, though!

You are so much better at spotting these things than I am, I hadn't even noticed I have gone back a week or so to another clip, just to compare (and make sure the mark isn't temporary feather position), and it is still there - so this will be useful going forwards. Pretty sure this is the male, and the female he enticed in yesterday: snapshot from 31st of Jan, in the same box: Now I will have to look through a few more clips to make sure it is the same bird in each!

You can call him Scarface hehe or Al If you get a defining feature it helps a whole lot, the male that is dominant in my garden has extra black feathers at the back of his head which stands out easily esp when he is in the box. I hope he gets a wife and moves in for you Matt.

Is the starling still making visits Matt?

Is the starling still making visits Matt? Been very quiet on the starlings for the last couple of weeks Paul. I don't know if this is normal behaviour for them, or if they have lost a bit of interest. The odd one popped its head in the hole last week but nothing since, and nothing like a few weeks back when the box was getting 10-15 visits most mornings.. Mind you, very cold and windy here (as everywhere I guess) and no visits from anything since that double visit a couple of days ago.

Having just said that, Paul, one has just popped its head in a few times! Nothing has tried to actually get right inside though (apart from Tony, who's been everywhere!).
Edit: Sparrow just popped his head into the starling box as well. Haven't seen one of those for a while, either..

Good they are still looking Matt, I am hoping you get a starling nest would be brilliant! Its looking very promising for the blue tits this year for you aswell, I have everything crossed for you Its freezing here don't think its getting above 1c for the next few days but feels minus 5 and night times minus 2 but feeling minus 9 so bitterly cold! At moment though its only really my tree box getting all the attention, Visits to other boxes are few and far between. Sadly not many visits from the sparrows this year aswell, We had a male in the box last week but I think our female is dead sadly I hope he gets a new mate after having them nesting for 5 years straight I'd miss them if they didn't this year still very early days though I guess! Oh by the way this morning your 3 hole box is getting cleaned out by a female, This is in the back garden on the house wall and the tree box is down the bottom of the garden. I have 2 females interested in the tree box and one roosting so I am now wondering if one is cleaning out this box for a back up kind of thing, Either way its a promising sign she's been in 4 times this morning so far.

Good to hear about the concrete box getting a bit of action, Paul! I have 2 x 3 hole concretes, both used to get a few visits but now only one is, really. No complaints from me, though, if they end up nesting in it. Its the one in the same position as the nest I had three years ago, definitely seems their preferred spot in the garden. All quiet on the robin box in the bush though - not had a visit of any sort since before Christmas I think. Was only great and blue tits then, never a robin, so I doubt they were even scoping it as a potential nest site. Still, fingers crossed - there's definitely a robin in the garden, but no idea where it normally nests. Fingers crossed for your sparrows - I think you were the only one to ever get them? I've had both my starling boxes inspected by them, but they've not gone inside.
