Yeah, I'm sure it's the same bird Taz, but *not* the bird that was building before the fight! At least, I think I am pretty sure of that now having looked through a few old pics. I think it might also be possible that two different females were checking out the box before one of them started building.

That is some drama going on in your garden Matt. I’ve seen birds take in and out nesting material earlier in the year and then go onto build it properly before egg laying, but not at this stage.
I just want her to settle in your Box so as you can take some more fab photos of them all

Great news Matt. I firmly believe they do go somewhere (nearest oak maybe) just to check all is in place before they commit to laying. Hoping it will be all systems go soon.

More strange goings on today! Tony(?) did his usual couple of inspections this morning, and then all quiet until suddenly, this afternoon, there was a completely frantic 45 minutes of action from the pair of them. In and out of the box, both wriggling, no material added (a little taken away), before they went off again, and haven't been back since. Really weird, who knows what they are doing? To make it even weirder, I am not even 100% certain this is Tony at all - it could be a different male altogether. Pretty sure same female, but looking a bit rough today (or recently in the pond). Vid from the motion detector showing one of the visits, below. There were about 25 like this (mostly shorter) recorded when I went to look. See what you think..

That is strange, I would've expected them to bring in more material and carry on building. I think all the birds have been strange this year 💆

Weird isn't it, Taz? I was wondering if anyone on here had seen anything similar, but it is hard to understand what is going on. Nothing all day, then 45 minutes of really frenetic activity - constantly in and out, swapping between male and female - and then nothing. Bizarre. Maybe they are just waiting for the right time to start, but it doesn't seem like normal behaviour. My guess is that they must have another nest on the go somewhere by now.

Bloody hell Matt, These two are giving you the run around this year aren't they?! The female behaviour does remind me of my second female meggie though, The male doesn't really bother with her these days hes all for peacock who was his first female so not seen alot of him in the stone box lately.

He must be deviding his time between two females and nest Matt, the fact they disappear makes you think maybe, just want to see them complete this nest now and progress from there It really is a guessing game

The weird thing is, Paul, that Tony showed no interest in this box at all in the run up to nesting. He was all about the three hole concrete box, and he would go in there 10 times a morning trying to call the female in. The only bird that went in this sideview was the female, and only a couple of time before nesting. Didn't even see Tony much when she was building the first time, but now he seems much more interested in it than her and keeps trying to call her in! Today was the first time she has gone in much since she stopped building, although she did pop in yesterday as well. It would be fascinating to know what they are doing the rest of the time.. but no return so far today after that activity.

Its wierd is this Matt, I wondered if they were two females by the way they acted. Doesnt look like Tony as in the scar he had. Wonder what tomorrow will bring. Mean while my Kate is roosting again tonight and is being fussy about the poo in there, picking up and shifting it around these birds will drive us potty

I thought exactly the same, Karen! Two birds taking it turns to do very female things - I've not seen a male do wriggling and nest sorting like that before. So strange. Do you remember the story of two females nesting in (I think?) one of the Bigg boxes years ago? So stranger things have happened.. and I don't know about "will drive us potty", I think some of us have already passed that point Fingers crossed for yours

OK, looked at the vids a bit more and also this morning's. Deffo not Tony this afternoon, I agree with you Karen, that was two females this afternoon - how else to explain the behaviour? Here's a couple of snaps of Tony from this morning - he is quite identifiable, not just the "scar", but also his tufty head (crest?), which males seem to have, and females not. The plot thickens..

I do remember that Matt, it does happen so who knows the coming days will reveal all, it is sure interesting viewing. I dont hold out much hope for Kate despite her still roosting and nest wriggling but again it is interesting behaviour.

We're learning all the time, Karen, although mostly what we are learning is that they are completely unpredictable and will do whatever they want, when they want!

Matt, what a mess isn't it? Anyway, that two of them make their minds up & you get a nest, as you won't bother then which ones they are.

Nothing today, Paul - quite a bit of activity again yesterday morning, but nothing at all after that. Perhaps that was the final flourish before deciding on elsewhere? Today is the first morning, actually, without a visit at all. It's been quite a ride!

Same here with our second female Matt, stone box has got around same amount of material that yours does. She's not been seen for the second day now after bringing material in 2 days before. Kinda giving up hope on her now, If it happens it happens, I'd be beyond disappointed if I didn't have other nests but we will see what happens with her time is well and truly ticking now and I can't even blame the weather its been lovely for well over a week now and this week looks even better! Do keep us posted, I have everything crossed for you! Be cruel if you didn't end up with a nest again after having her actually building for you!

Be cruel if you didn't end up with a nest again after having her actually building for you! I find it almost unbelievable that nothing nested at all after the amount of interest from sparrows, starlings and bluetits we had in the run-up, but that is the way it goes I guess! I'm not sure why, but they just don't seem to want to nest in our garden.
