There's just been a big fight in the box - I guess between two females? I don't really know what is going on, I will have to look back through the videos but from what I have seen already it is not very pleasant viewing. The whole thing lasted about 4 minutes.

Oh goodness Matt. I've witnessed these fights and they are not pleasant viewing as you say. Why they fight over one box when there are many to choose from? Or is it a territory thing? Hope things quieten down and nest building goes ahead.

Yeah it was horrible, Sammi - I have no idea what really happened. I need to try and work out which female was which, and which female is now continuing to visit the box. It has all gone a bit weird since the fight - the female has visited the box perhaps 50 times since, but has not brought any new material, or taken any out. Just wriggles, and then the odd period of just standing in the box for a minute at a time. Recovering from the fight, maybe?

Hi Matt Hope that is the end of the fighting and whichever blue tit started building will continue and make good progress with it, it’s not what you wanted to happen. They sure do put us through it, hope you have better news on your future posts

Horrid to witness these fights, but at least it shows how interested they are in your box - I like to see the positive . Sue

Matt, I'm so sorry you had to watch a fight & that was a long one too! The others have seen fights of course so I know how awful they are - think I'm better off not having cameras sometimes. Anyway, let's hope it's resolved & "the winner" carries on in your box as you certainly deserve it.

Are you still getting activity after the fight Matt? Yeah, but it's been a bit weird Pete. One (or other) of the females has continued to go in and out of the box all day since the fight, perhaps 50-100 times, but has brought no new material in. She is wriggling when she goes inside, though.. Tony also popped in earlier, which is a first inside this box (as far as I know).

Deleted my last post to you Matt as I see I was on the wrong page and things have moved on for you a bit! Well, it looks promising, usually the winner of the fight will take up the box, well at least that is what I assume. It has been cold here last two days and we had snow yesterday. My two nests have slowed up a bit due to this I think but it's hard to know what the birds are thinking. Hopefully when we get past this cold snap things will speed up again. I see you had some more material come in so that is good news.Be cautiously optimistic!

Yeah, it will be Paul. I should try to work out which female is now using the box - i.e., is it the same one who was roosting? Have you ever seen the behaviour I have seen today, where female is in and out of the box all day doing wriggles, as if building a nest, but not actually bringing any new material in? Seems very odd to me.. Still popping in and out now, although not quite as frequently (was every minute or so for a couple of hours).

Hi Matt I always think they are measuring up when they do this. I usually think it's a good sign but I've had them doing that in my box and they've now disappeared

Is she roosting Matt? I didnt think females actually did the fighting, thought it was just males mainly, anyway I hope all settles down and it continues.

The female fights are always the worse sadly Karen I have had females building and drove out the box after a fight then second female wasn't even interested in the box!

Not roosting tonight. It will be very interesting to see what happens tomorrow. No more material today, but an incredible number of visits and nest wriggles. I don't even know at this point which female it was that kept on visiting..?

Yes Pete, definitely still a lot of interest from this one female, although the behaviour is kind of strange! It will be interesting to see what develops tomorrow.
Karen, I have loads of footage from yesterday and today, so I should be able to compare the birds and try to work out what is going on. It would be very interesting to know - was it one bird yesterday and another after the fight today? Or were both females visiting before today, and that's what kicked things off? Shame they are so hard to tell apart, but I'm sure you could do it!! I'll keep you all posted tomorrow, although I will be out for most of the day..
