Here goes my new thread as well, now that Paul has kicked things off with his!
I am still in the process of updating and adding to my boxes, and have so far got three up: a 3 hole (28mm) concrete, an "open" nest box in the bushes (hoping for a robin), and an updated sideview box with a new concrete front.
Three hole concrete:
A view of the raspberry pi/camera, and led strip lights beneath. Underneath the camera assembly is a piece of "light box" translucent perspex that diffuses the light:
Mounting hooks on the back - this was a revised version to the one I sent Paul, and I have made a neater way to mount on the wall without a back plate:
In situ on the side of the shed. Lid is painted plywood and just sits on top:
This box literally went up late this afternoon, so no action yet!
The "robin box". This is just an old bluetit box, with a large hole cut in the front. The hole is 80mm, so the box is not completely open but it is pretty open. I've seen commercial robin boxes with similar sized openings, so maybe? The box is more hidden than it looks in this pic (from quite close). From 10 feet a way it is hard to spot it at all. It is in amongst some (evergreen) jasmine on a fence, and when pruning recently I found two old nests in there so something obviously likes the location:
The box has been up a week or so, and funnily enough a great tit has popped in on most mornings for a quick look. Wasn't really expecting that but I doubt he is scoping it as a nest site. Apologies for poor image quality - I have everything setup to run through iSpy with a low resolution/fps at the moment, just to check for visits. The coloured rectangles are part of the motion detection stuff..
Finally, here is the modified sideview with concrete front, which has also been up for a week or so:
One cheeky visit just after it went up - same deal with image quality:
One more 3 hole bluetit box and 2 x concrete starling boxes still to go up, and then its time to sit back and wait for 5 months
