Should we be worried ? The blue tits have used same nest box for the last 2 years and last year we had 9 fledglings and all survived They were a bit late starting this year and seemed a bit half hearted building the nest in fits and starts Looks pretty much finished now but no more activity for 9 days apart from a blue tit looking in briefly 2 days ago Has anyone else come across this ? Many thanks Bob

Hello Bob and Welcome to the forum!
It seems, certainly with BTs this year, that this has been the norm. I had a BT build a nest almost to completion in a short space of time, then inexplicably abandoned it! It was so disappointing for me as I had never had a BT before - always have GTs in my Wallbox.
If you read through the posts, you will find that some have been lucky with other boxes and others up to now have been left without.
Hope you get to be a lucky one!

Hello Bob, . Sometimes, blue tits will build more than one nest Bob, or suddenly get put off a particular site for some reason. Difficult to know why they haven’t completed the nest. Maybe they have chosen elsewhere or maybe one of them has been predated. Hopefully it is not the latter. Keep us informed of any ongoing success. Sue

Hi Bob...I had the same experience this year....my bird was there for over a month and roosting too. Nest being built with gusto...then suddenly one morning she went out at 6:20 am and never came back.
I'd like to think she found a more favorable site but my heart tells me otherwise. I believe she was predated.
On saying that there is many the story over the years on this site where nests were built up to a point then abandoned for no apparent reason ...but then after 2 weeks or sometimes 3 weeks they return and carry on as before like nothing ever happened???

Thanks for all your comments . We had another nestbox without a camera with blue tits nest building which has also been abandoned I suspect . Not seen any sorry piles of feathers in the garden and still a few blue tits in the garden but they seem to be heading towards an ivy covered cherry tree at the front so lets hope they have just relocated Anyway I'll let you know either way what happens ....

I had the same experience last year. Blue Tits built and finished the nest and then disappeared.

Hi Bob This has happened to me many times Bob, I have 3 nest boxes in my garden and many occasions the bluetit will start building in one then leave it halfway through then move on to build a complete nest and lay eggs, but I have often seen the blue tint still go and peep inside the half built nest which she’d started. I personally think it’s a distraction method, but that’s just my theory! But it has happened a lot. Elle xx
