So if it does spread it might be 5-6 years before it hits here. We had a similar epidemic 3-5 years ago with Greenfinches. I remember finding a couple dead on the paths on a walk. Two days ago we saw the first Greenfinches on our feeder in 4 years!

Oh Benn not more bad news for our wildlife. I remember the Greenfinch virus from a while back consequently not seen one on my feeder for some time now. Wasn't it to do with feeders not being cleaned properly or was that knocked on the head? Let's hope there is some resilience in our population if it eventually gets here .

I did some research on the Greenfinch virus Kathy and surprising to me it has been around since 2005! It is a virus and yes it can linger around feeders that have mouldy or old food and that is why regular cleaning with weak bleach is recommended. Here is the most recent article I could find from 3 years ago: Where have the greenfinches gone?

Oh dear, I remember the Greenfinch disease, still not getting many back on our feeders. We went through a period of a couple of sick looking Greenies that kept coming to our feeders, so for a while we stopped feeding them. Couldn't bear to see them like that.
