5 out of 8 last time I could see Paul, I’ve had BT nests for over 10 years and there has always been one egg left unhatched, last year it was 2. So I’m just hoping this is the year the’ll all hatch

He’s certainly got the hang of it now though, in and out non stop, great Dad is our Skype. I found another chick this morning gone through hours of footage and can still only see 6 chicks hatching ,anyway 6 has become 7, which is nice, it’s usually the other way round as in losing one. The nest is hard to make out this year and not helped by a big feather permanently covering some of it.....

Have your birds find the mealworms Helen?

Yes Paul, they didn’t seem to need them much in the beginning, with lots of green caterpillars and spiders been found, but now its almost non stop, I’ve been giving them the mini mealworms which over time grow a bit and seem to increase as i think there must be some eggs or grubs or whatever in the big bag they give you. I put it all into a big round plastic Cadbury’s roses container with holes in the top. There is a lot of some sort of grain in it tom but all I know is that every time I open it I seem to have so much more, that’s why I think there must be eggs or whatever as well with the minis.
Anyway they finally came to an end and I changed them over to normal sized mealworms......I suppose it takes awhile, this was the first attempt.......

It's a decent nest Helen and yes, coming along a treat by the looks of it. When are they due to fledge?

Yes Kathy, all 7 chicks seem to be doing well so far, they still have awhile to go, they should fledge all going well around the 30/31st

I was being very smug thinking that my now 9month old cat couldn’t climb the bird feeder, none of my other cats or visiting cats ever attempted to climb it, but Púca is the most intelligent and fearless cat I’ve ever come across, while I thought she was failing, she was just practising Caught her up level with the ‘Scott feeder’ ran out to shoo her away, and there was a GT terrified to move inside it even when I was only about an inch away from it. Needless to say Púca was put in the naughty corner straight away (locked inside). So for the moment until I get a better idea, I’ve just loosely wound chicken wire round it, so if she goes to climb it, it should collapse down. The picture shows the feeder with all sorts of tape just above container, it stops the sparrows putting their beaks in and grabbing all the worms, only the Tits can get at it now, it actually works. You can just see Púca bottomleft of the photograph, sulking away, she’s very black so hard to make out against the dark background.

Hope everything goes well for you and your BTs Helen. If that were me I think I would have tried the Scotty in that tree to the right of the photo - it's branches may well have been too flimsy to support the weight of your cat(?) Mind you if what you've done works....

Well done Helen, we have to use all our ingenuity against these clever creatures, and it surprises me how many things people come up with Sue
