Hi All i received a lovely msg this morning off Paul as I haven’t been in touch, so thought I’d post an update to give you all an idea as to why! I have been really busy on the phone a lot with family members (video calling everyday) who are all in the ‘at risk category’ 3 of my brothers, 2 of which are alone, An Auntie in her 70s who is resident in Spain who is literally alone, and more importantly our 2 daughters who most will know are nurses . One of our daughters is still at work and doing a fantastic job, but so worrying for us as she hasn’t got any PPE (don’t get me started) And we found out last week she’d been exposed to positive tested patients so next couple of weeks is especially going to be a worrying time, hopefully in next couple of days her own PPE will have arrived, (They are all ordering their own!) But that’s another story! Then there is our other daughter who on Friday will be 39weeks pregnant with our very first long awaited grandchild. so we have had lots of tears as I was originally going to be present at the birth along with her partner, now they will be lucky if her partner will be able to be present! However, it is her ward so she will not be alone as her colleagues will take care of her, but it’s still not the way you envisage your first child coming into the world!! Also as she has to be indoors for 12 weeks & I also have to be in for 12 weeks (I have a severe lung condition) I don’t know when we will see our grandchild, but as long as everyone does as they are told it will all be worth it!! And soon be over!! After all that I bet you all wish you hadn’t ask where I’d been Well here goes with the birds : I had 2 roosters: 1 great tit which has tried for years to build a nest but has always been chased off by the bluetits, he is roosting for first time, but not bringing any female friends over! 1 blue tit in my angle box, but he moved out about 3 weeks ago Since he moved out iv had absolutely nothing from bluetits at all, not even a little look Nothing coming in the garden even!, now the strange thing is, all these years of having nests, there has only ever been a couple of pairs at the most of bluetits around, even though there are lots of trees, however, this year I have seen at least 1/2 a dozen pairs Of bluetits, so there is no excuse why I haven’t had a peep?!!! I will try and catch up with everyone’s posts, but for now, wish you all success. p.s Sorry for the long post & bending your ears everyone, but I feel great for getting all that off my chest!!! Best therapy!! Elle xx

It is a little strange though Paul don’t you agree?, just how many people don’t have nests this year when all this weirdness is going on, you have to wonder if it is coincidental or whether there is some connections anyone else have any thoughts?? Elle xx

Firstly let me say big congratulations on your expected grandchild that is absolutely fantastic news. Such a shame everyone’s plans have been messed up but I so hope everyone around you stays safe and that you will have many many happy hours to come with that precious baby when all this is over. This PPE shortage is a nightmare, our son who works in a hospital says it’s absolutely crazy and is having great difficulty even sourcing his own. The bird situation does seem strange Elle, so many without signs of a nest. Others that start and then the birds stop for ages. All a bit weird, but don’t think it can be related to this virus - just think the whole world is topsy turvy at the moment This forum is the best medicine I know for getting things off your chest Elle. We are like minded people and lucky to have such a wonderful bunch that are ready to sympathise or help with whatever they can. Truly a place where no-one minds us ranting and raving or asking stupid questions. Also, a place to take our mind off what’s going on around us if only for a few minutes. So good to see you back, and hope you manage to pop in as often as you can. Take good care Sue ps did message you a few days ago but doesn’t appear that you’ve seen it. X

Just a quick update, this morning at 8.15am a Bluetit went in my sideview box and did a couple of wiggles!, now the males iv had in the past (not personally that is ) have always done the wiggles first, as if sizing it up so as not to waste time bringing any females if it’s not suitable. Now I’m not holding my breath (I couldn’t anyway!) but the female was flitting around the garden looking for small bugs, all this at the same time as a pair of greatits which was also doing exact same flitting thing! Both pairs came on the patio and came so close to my open door I was afraid that they may take flight in wrong direction & fly in, so I closed the door & obviously they all flew off My roosters I had have both gone now, bluetit went a while ago, & greatit left a few nights ago, came back for one night then went again, so I left a note in there like my mum once did for my brother (when he was very young) who used to come & go at all hours, it read “Stop treating this house like a hotel, you either live here or you dont, make a choice!!!” Obviously the greatit made the choice & left! My brother, however, stayed because he knew where his bread was buttered!! (Does anyone know what I mean by that or is it just a Hull thing? ) Anyway, good luck to all who have nests, I’m very jealous Elle xx

Use that phrase all the time... In fact just the other week when I was cursing the cat to high heaven, I must have said "she knows where her bread is buttered" at least ten times. ha,ha!! So, that phrase has crossed the water too.... Good luck with the note. Hope it works!

elle I have just read your thread and do sincerely hope all relatives including your nearest and dearest stay firmly away from this predator. Working on the front line is such a brave thing to do and I shall be clapping tonight for all those workers. Keep well and safe elle. Congrats on the grandchild can you arrange Skype?

Hi all thanks for replies Well iv given up hope of a nest this year, it’s really weird though cos nothing has changed at all, so really wondering what has happened?! I am still switching tv on in kitchen though, just incase No news on Baby yet either, and we are definitely going to do video call Kathy. On the upside, my sister in law (She’s a matron in NHS) has turned a corner & is recovering after 16days of covid 19, so I have to be thankful for that, one less to worry about! good luck to all those with nests & eggs this year , I will be dibbing in to read updates Elle xx

Is this the first year you've gone without a nest Elle? I don't know what's happened if nothings changed, Did you notice less BT's in your area this year or anything?

So pleased your sister in law is on the road too recovery, and may she continue getting stronger. As for nests it's been quite hit and miss this year. I'm certainly not counting any chicks yet 😉, because it can still change..
Stay safe x

Great news on your sister in law...and looking forward to hearing the news on the new bab!
Now...I'm just chiming in to say don't give up just yet! I've just experienced 1st hand yesterday, that they do arrive very late.
As Taz says, not counting my chicks just yet, but it does go to show that they are STILL looking even this late in the season.
I'm still holding out hope for EVERYONE here on this forum - it is still 'game on' until 1st May I say!!!!

Hi All Yes I am officially a ‘Nanna’! Baby Girl ‘Delilah Rose’ born after very traumatic 35hrs labour followed by emergency c-section. She had to stay in hosp which was hard for her partner cos he had to leave soon after the birth then never saw either until nearly 3 days later! But they are both home now and doing exceptionally well. Another 6/7 weeks and we will be able to meet her in the flesh, it’s been so so difficult, I have cried a river I can tell yer!! Right... so let’s talk about what the forum is really about answer to you Paul, yes this year is the first time in I don’t know how many years (I would go so far as to say it could possibly be 8 to 10years) that I haven’t had a nest This is why I’m finding it so strange & a bit coincidental of what’s going on in the world I have moved a box from my garage wall onto the same wall as my angled box, but you have lots of boxes in a row Paul 🤔🤔 and as for quantities of birds it is quite the contrary, I normally only have 1 or 2 pairs at the most considering all the trees I have at the back of me, but this year there are lots of pairs, iv actually never seen so many! And don’t forget I did have a bluetit & a greatit which roosted then both left. I have been wondering if someone of a high being (I am not religious at all, I’m afraid) but have wondered if ‘someone’ knew I wouldn’t have the time to put into this years birds (too busy on phone 24/7 with family members & now new granddaughter (videocall a lot of day now with daughter)! Makes yer wonder doesn’t it??🤔 Thankyou all for your kind regards & concerns for my sister-in-laws, I am so glad to say she is now back where she says she belongs doing what she loves to do, working with the NHS ps. I will be bobbing in an out when I can, and try to keep up with everyone’s posts, there just isn’t enough hours in the day not that I want the days longer, if anything I want the days to be only ‘1hour long’ cos then I get to meet my granddaughter quicker good luck everyone, stay safe & don’t take unnecessary risks Elle xx

Many many congratulations Elle , it is the best thing in the world having grandchildren. What a beautiful name they have chosen for her. To the world baby Delilah Rose . So hope it isn’t too long before you can get to hold that precious bundle in your arms Elle. On birdie front, I too find it strange that you don’t have a nest Elle . As you say strange times at the moment. I was convinced this was to be my year on the birdie front as well with so many visits and material brought in etc and when I saw the male feeding the female in the box (something I have never witnessed) I was totally convinced - but then they just disappeared. I guess it is a mystery why they choose one box over another, but they had spent so many days in and out and cleaning etc. Oh well. Now you have more exciting things to keep you going through the days, and I hope you can somehow sneak a photo of Delilah Rose on the site for us all to see. Enjoy, enjoy enjoy. Sue

Massive congrats on becoming a nan Elle!! You must be over the moon, I hope you get to see her and hold her soon! On the bird subject, Did you notice any difference in the numbers of BT's in the run up to spring? It is strange you haven't got a nest giving you've had one every year for 8 plus years! Do you think it could be because of more people putting up boxes? I had a phone call with Gardenature the other day and owner was saying they are getting more orders now than christmas , mothers / fathers day. I think with more people being at home they are spending more time in the garden or watching the wildlife.
