That looks like long pieces of straw to me Beechnut, Bends far to easy to be tree related, Straw on the other hand blue tits do use alot of at start of building. Well mine always have never had a box with just 100% moss.

Do Blue Tits really use what must be to them, tree branches to build a nest?? My tongue was firmly in my cheek when I said that Paul. They are in fact long pieces of dead grass!

Oh I see Beechnut, Bad on my part then! Blue tits do sometimes us alot of straw and dried grass though, Its a mix of that and moss. Always bringing long pieces in then taken it back out when it gets on their nerves I'm so pleased you've got both nests though, I really want a GT nest at this point, Never had one but only see 2 in the garden not a big number at all here more BT's.

Here's a photo of the Cherry Tree Box - Because I've only had roosters the past two winters - didn't bother to get it down and clean it out for some time, mainly because of the bad weather and also because I'm not as good at heights as I was! I was rather surprised when I tested the camera a couple of weeks ago and found that the box had been totally cleaned (it had the remains of the previous GT nest), but I'd seen no activity around the box, nor expected any with a GT in the Wallbox about 15m away..... now we'll watch and wait.....

Welcome back Elle - hope all goes well for you and yours. You certainly have had a rough time over the last couple of months.
The cherry blossom is exceptional this year - something to add a little cheer and take our minds of the dreaded virus. Iv'e just come in from doing a bit of lawn edging near to the cherry tree and it's absolutely humming with the bees and other insects around the blossom.
Although it looks as if I might get two boxes occupied, I'm not sure that there will be a result in the GT box - she's been in several times today and sat on the two eggs for a quarter of an hour or so, then vacated the box without covering the eggs, returning an hour or two later! She's in now and snuggled down on the eggs for the night. I'll be watching with interest in the morning to see if the third egg has appeared.

Wow that is a stunning tree!!! Is that a Bird Cherry...? '(Prunus Avium)
We have planted a juvenile one of these in our new "wild" garden...really hope it turns out as splendid as your tree in a few years time.
Also planted another varient of this called Prunus Avium Plena...this does not bear cherries like the traditional Bird Cherry but the white double blooms are a sight to behold.
Great that everything is going so well there...

Wow Beechnut such a lovely spot for a nestbox. Fingers crossed for a couple of successful nests for you. Does the spring give us a lift with all the emerging blossom. ๐

Thanks guys - the cherry tree is certainly making a show this year. I've no idea what it is, the wife's mother brought a shoot out of her mother's garden 'hundreds of years ago' and we stuck it there and it has supported a nestbox for at least 15 years, but of course the birds eat the cherries, most before they reach that dark red colour.
The blossom is beginning to fall now and we get a mini snow storm walking by.

Bullfinches in particular are especially attracted to the cherrys on these trees...watch out for them next Winter.
I think they are gorgeous birds.

No change in the appearance of this box since the pm of the 11th, so I think I shall disconnect the camera and wait to see if I see anything happening from the outside. Shame really, I was quite excited at getting 1st BT nest in a camera box in about 15 years, but 'c'est la vie'.
I'm not too confident that anything will come of my GT eggs in the wallbox, nor whether there are any records of such a small clutch, with the eggs being laid 9 days apart, hatching!
Meg is diligently incubating the two eggs, with the usual number of short comfort breaks, and being regularly fed in the box by Mac - so to the casual viewer everything is normal...

In relation to the 1st GT egg, if still viable it would be close to hatching soon though wouldn't it...going by the normal timeline. You might get a surprise some morning soon?

Although I haven't seen any obvious altercations, I suppose that's always a possibility Paul...

This is certainly a quandary Beechnut!
Is the greatit a first time mum I wonder (sorry if anyone has already suggested this)
I will definitely be watching for this outcome
