It wont overheat just keep it on a solid surface ( table ) NOT THE CARPET, you can leave it plugged into the mains if you want.

All these techno people on here. . I haven’t got a clue. My son set my system up from spy cameras/green feathers, onto my laptop, and only way I can tell if I have a visit etc is to have laptop on all day with it set to motion record. Am I running the risk of it overheating then? It does power right down, but don’t want to risk losing it altogether. Laptop not used for anything else. Sue I wouldn’t have thought so Sue. Are you thinking about what we have said about keeping our laptops on? With streaming on to YouTube, the computer has to work quite hard all the time, so it can get a bit hot.....a bit like us when we have to do some exercise! Do you have a tablet or iPad? If you do, you can also have an app called XMEye, for green feathers cameras (I know you can for the ip ones anyway)

I'd say it should be fine Sue...if its not being used for anything else, then there is no extra burden on it. If you hear it whirring more loudly than usual, then I would keep an eye on it.
I found when I had the OBS streaming software open, then opened my email, then the bird diaries page and starting viewing Youtube, and then I was browsing the internet, the laptop got so slow it would hardly work at all and start whirring like crazy!!
So, its seems having this streaming software on in the background constantly is not ideal for everyday computer use.

Thanks Pete, Amanda and GBH. Yes, I was on about keeping the laptop on to monitor/record any movements etc. This is a redundant laptop that isn’t used for anything else as I use an iPad for everything else I need. Usually have it on from around 8:00 in the morning and until pesky rooster comes in at night (thought he’d have left now we have good weather ), during which time it captures short videos of any visits and at all other times it powers down. Haven’t a clue as to how to link it to my iPad or tv and, extension cables anywhere are a no no. Laptop is sat on a table behind sofa , out of sight which pleases ‘himself’ . Was just concerned about overheating, but understand from all your posts that not likely to if just used for birdies and nothing else going on. Thank you for your help. Us oldies need as much help as we can get . Sue

Didn't realise you needed to post up a refreshed 'Live Stream' link every day...here is mine for today:

Didn't realise you needed to post up a refreshed 'Live Stream' link every day...here is mine for today: Yeah, I found this a bit of a pain with mine. Every time the video stops/restarts, Youtube thinks of it as a different video and it gets a new ID - so your link will still point to the old video, which is no longer the "live" one. One thing you can do instead is to give a link to your channel - in your case, www.youtube.com/channel/UCv6LBHa2g_ALb2WjP05rnxQWhen you click on the channel, you will see all of your videos, and if there is a live one this will be shown with a "LIVE" label, so you can then just click on that one. I don't know a way to create a single link that will always point to the current live video, but if someone does then please post!

Thanks Matt....yes, I'd be interested to hear that one too...But having my Youtube channel link is a good start!
But as my channel is there for all to see, is there any reason I should be worried about these channels being public?
Is it possible to put a password on it, so only people from the forum can view them? Or maybe that can't be done??? Maybe its overly cautious...is it????

Hi all...beautiful hot sunny day here, lots of bird activity in the garden and mating calls across the trees... But no sign of my builder....I'm worried something is wrong. Yesterday at about 4pm she was working away in the box and a loud noise happened under her box startling her and she flew out ....she has not been back since which is unlike her as she normal works until dusk. On saying that, there was a rooster in the box last night - I assumed it was her, but as she has not been back to today perhaps that rooster is just another female bird...? I would have thought there would be loads of activity in the box today. But dead to the world?? Edited: 1 hour later!!! Panic over - she just arrived in...very relieved. I really thought she wasn't going to come back - overall though, really, really quiet day for birdboxes. Thought the sun would bring out so much activity.
Here is my live stream link for today, I'll leave it running for a few hours. Todays link to my 'live stream' - click on this sentence.

She might know it isn't time yet to egg lay in your area GBH, Your box got a fair bit of material in so it shows she is serious about the box, Maybe something is just delaying her in known its not time yet to get it finished. I wouldn't worry about lack of building some days and more others.

Perhaps...!!! I was terribly anxious yesterday though as there was zero visits at all which is really unusual...I really thought she had been predated. However, at the very last minute just before the real dark, she arrived in to roost. In another turn of events, and has highlighted the reason why Beaktrix might be staying away, is that I have just caught Spooky the cat up on the roof and I have just filmed her sitting right by Beaktrixs box... with her head right at the box entrance looking in...I'm fuming here. We tried to do the right thing by this cat, and this what happens. I could kick myself for thinking that it might be different....we were complete idiots. We went against our gut feeling and did everything we said we wouldn't do....all because we couldn't bring ourselves to see her left abandoned. So, thats the end of my journey with a nest for this year - it obvious that this cat will ruin everything I have worked on for the past year. So deeply disappointed and annoyed at myself.

oh sorry to hear this GBH, will you be keeping the cat still? seems a few of us have our season ended with no nests, so sad we wait for so long for the chance, this year of all years we needed something to keep us focused

Don’t give up GBH. Can you keep the cat in for a couple of weeks? Lots of people have house cats. Know not really fair but we are all confined and having to get on with it. Spooky is lucky to have a home at all so keeping him fed and watered inside somewhere just for a while isn’t going to be so bad for him. Know your pain, but hopefully birds will be back . Sue ps. What about a cat lead so you can still exercise is in the garden away from you bird box. So want you to keep your birds.

GBH, I have a few cats, I know it can be hard keeping them away from Boxes, One of our cats always jumps on the garage to get over the waste land at the back. This is right by the blue tit tree box, The BT's so have a little song and dance if they see him but its never stopped them nesting. What I try and do during breeding season is limit their time out until evening, My cats are pretty lazy anyway so when they do go out its a little visit to the waste land at the back and back in within the hour. Can you not bring spooky in during daytime? then let it back out at dusk? I normally let my cats out around 7pm for hour for little exercise and go on the waste land they normally come back over by 8pm and then in all night / day again. I understand its not a house cat but if its friendly it might be worth trying to keep it indoors during daytime. One of my little guys die last week of heart failure, He was on meds for 18 months, Vets only give him 3 weeks to live because he had cancer plus heart failure but we got 18 months out of him. Sad thing is because of corona I wasn't allowed to go in with him when he got put asleep so that really broke my heart that last person he seen was a vet He always used to watch the birds haha didn't do them no harm but he did check them out when he could. Here he is tigger he was called, but we called him "Big Tig"

Ah gawd Paul...what a beaut. So sorry for your loss, and in the way you couldn't go with him to the vet. That is really heartbreaking. What a lovely, and clearly loved cat. Really hard to lose a member of the family like that. Hope he's met all his pals over the rainbow bridge and he's jumping and playing in the sunshine now. No more pain or illness. You see this is my conflict!!! I'm heartbroken just reading that.... Its not that I don't like cats - I do!!! But I know what they are capable of. So in order to protect myself, I had said I downright just wouldn't have one at this new house....and she comes to us. Its like the universe is playing some sort of joke on me!!!! Yes, only for the Covid 19 shut down, I image we might have made a call to the shelter after her antics this morning...she's damn lucky no-one is open!!! As each day goes by Spooky is breaking more and more boundaries with us. She was clearly never a feral cat...this is becoming more apparent to us now. She was loved by someone and very socialised at one point, as was obviously left indoors most of the time - Spooky attempts all sorts of schemes to try and get into the house. She is very affectionate and I'm not so sure she is used to being outdoors. Whoever abandoned her should be really ashamed of themselves. I'm a person who always had a cat indoors, this outside 'farm cat' business is new to me....but for this occasion, as a compromise we said "Ok, lets provide for her, she'll want for nothing, but she is NOT coming into the house" - That is our only real rule. This is the house that my husband made for her. I have even sourced a metal heat plate that will go under her bed in the winter!!! Give me a break cat!!!! lol!!! We'll give it another while....but as per the online advice for training cats, I'll be out with a water spray gun to introduce some "negative association" with being up on that roof!!!

Sorry to hear about Big Tig Paul, it’s heartbreaking to lose a part of your furry family. I’m positive he will have had the best life ever living with you! GBH, I have a cat, she is 15 now but loves watching the birds.....on my iPad though. As soon as she hears the noise of a bird entering the bird box or pecking I the side of the box, she wakes from her sleep and is sitting in front of the iPad! Hopefully now Spooky has inspected the bird box, she won’t bother so much with it. Maybe as suggested keep Spooky in during the day.....or get her an iPad to watch the birds on!

Lol!!! I really hope so...although she was making to jump up again, so I put a spikey yard brush sticking out on top of the conservatory to block her way...she jumps from the kitchen window sill up to the top of the conservatory. Brat!!!! This was her earlier....could have murdered her.

Paul, I am so very sorry for your loss of Big Tig. What a beautiful fur baby. GBH what about a rabbit run around her shelter until evening time? Know it’s difficult, I would be so upset and angry, but maybe she has been chasing birds etc to live on. Hope you can come up with a solution to break her interest. Good luck. Sue

Oh dear! GBH what a dilemma! About 15 years ago we had about 20 cats living on our development of 18 houses and they all seemed to want to congregate in our back garden! Then we adopted a rescued a rabbit for our then young daughter. This rabbit was a right character who used to love playing football and would not stand for any cats being in the vicinity. She used to chase them all off Luckily we now only have a single cat on our street so we do not have the problem anymore. Magpies however!

Well...no sign of her all day and she didn't come in to roost.
Knew there was something up when there was no visits at all to even check the box. She's gone elsewhere...or worse, which I don't want to think about.
After all that...
Bitterly disappointed.
