Oh Happy Day!!! Visits resumed this morning, and new material has been brought in....nest building has finally resumed in the long view box. Nothing new in the sideview box. I've relocated the open front Robin box now to East facing side of the wooden shed, in among a re-located mature Glasnevin bush (Solanum crispum)...which will hopefully create great coverage very soon if I haven't killed it. Its a bit sparse at present so chances of a nest this year are slim! My homemade swallow/martin boxes will be ready in a few days...as I didn't have cement or plaster of paris (nor can I get some in this current Covid 19 climate), I decided to make the 'nest cups' out of a thick mixture of moss, twine and real mud, placed onto a small ball, so its needs a good few days for the mold to set hard. Going well so far though. Watch this space. Here are my two nest cups molds drying on the ball - I put the ball onto a double dog bowl holder that I conveniently found in the hedge while also looking for a ball!!!:
Edited to add photo.

Great Work GBH! I used to do a lot of running until 5 years ago when my gammy knee finally packed in altogether, only a couple of half marathons and a few 10k's per year. I can imagine how stir crazy it is for you given your normal training routine. We were lucky in that we always had a decent treadmill in our large basement games room which we still use (brisk walking only for me . Impressed by your martin/swallow moulds. Are you going to mount them ounder your eaves for martins or put one in your shed for the swallows? I put a pair of mortar House martin ones 20 years ago and they are occupied every year with two adjacent mud ones being built/repaired by the birds every spring. We now have a colony of about 10 - 15 nests on the small street and its always fun to try to guess the April day the first ones arrive (usually around the 24th) Good luck!

Ah Benn good to know there is a fellow runner on the forum...."only a couple of half marathons"...lol!! Great a achievement and one not alot can boast about... sorry to hear about the knee. So frustrating when injury sets in. I've been battling a foot injury now for over a year....still ran the marathon though. Just took it handier. I'm not a speedster by any means anyway.
Yes, I'm allowing this 2km limit be too much of an excuse not to get out though....need to cop on. I do get the feeling that Dublin marathon may not be going ahead this year....again, I'm allowing myself to believe that. I'll get a right shock if it does go ahead...ha,ha!!! But there is still loads of time, even if I've to start from scratch by the time all this is over.
As for the swallow boxes...yes, I'm going to mount them under the eaves of the shed, east facing, side by side...
I don't have an open barn type shed. I must read up a bit more about swallows as I thought they also used nests under the eaves. But now that I recall, it is a shed with open doors that they prefer. That's what we had at the last house and they used to swoop in and out.
Well, I suppose it going to have to be Martins I'm hoping for so!!! I will tailor the cup accordingly and chip out a small semi-circle hole for them so....fingers crossed.
So...bird wise, did get a few visits to the sideview boxe today, things are definitely picking up a bit....Beaktrix is in the long view box still chipping away at the floor, but really, its dreadfully quiet over all compared to two weeks ago.
I really do wish that the activity would go up a notch....especially since we are all at home with the opportunity to enjoy it! Come on birds!!!

Hi GBH Thought I'd respond to you on your thread rather than congest Sammi's thread with our techy stuff. Yep I have been out bid on stuff many times and wish I had just upped my bid. My thing is Macbook Air's 11.3 inch which i have two of at any one time until I spill coffee or beer on them!!! The video/audio spicer was cheap as chips. Can't remember how much but I am sure it was around a tenner! I've seen bundles for sale but unfortunately the cameras that come with them are too large for nest boxes. I am tempted by the IP/ NVR set up but am conflicted in my own mind as I have spent so much this last 12 months on Sony Effio 700TVL cameras and stuff, but then again I am sure I can recoup a few quid on the existing cameras and DVR. The current lock down has created hundreds of interested people on my wife's network marketing business Facebook site. People who have never seen this sort of stuff before are clamouring for more! Hence my interest in going live which I have started tonight!

Re the running! Keep it up as long as you can!!!
Funny I was the runner in our family then I had a cruciate ligament reconstruction in 2000 so my running stopped then apart from a couple of years in 2009 and again for 3 years starting 2013. In 2003 my wife decided to run the GMR for the MS society after her brother and sister were diagnosed with the disease a year or so before. Her sister died a few days before the race so she was featured on the BBC coverage.
From that she was invited back every year by the organisers to start with the celebs and even won the GNR inaugural bravery award:
Now my daughter and wife run for miles whilst I look on in envy!
I've missed it this last 5 years and there is nothing like running through woods, fields or moorland at 6am on a beautiful spring morning or through 6 inches of fresh snow or over wind strewn and rain lashed moors!!!! Freeeedom!!!!!

Wow!!!! Just wow!!! That is so inspiring.
Your wife spoke beautifully and she is so right...to have an event like that televised and to celebrate nit just the elites but to have the "casual" runner recognised.
I'm so sorry for her (and your) loss and so close to the event...that must have been so tough...yet, it probably gave her the drive and determination she needed on the day to get her through each mile, running through her sorrow.
Sorry about your injury too... so frustrating.
And yes, it is strange phenomenon when you come in from a run, dripping wet after having hail stones lashing into your face and say "aah, that was great"
...it is a type of lunacy...but a good one!! I think you've just helped me break my lazy rut. Thank you!

Delighted with life...finally got the live stream to work!!! Kildare birdboxes are now on YouTube! So, here is the stream of all four of my cameras: Click here to view my birdboxes & their outside views
Of course herself has gone off now after furious material collection this morning - nothing to view for now...she's probably gone for a snack.

Hi Sue, sorry!! Yes, I had to close my laptop....so once the laptop is off, the streaming is off.
Thats the only draw back of the 'live stream' - you have to leave the software running on the computer or laptop.
I was giving it ago yesterday and left it on for about 4 hours. I noticed the software was heavy on CPU usage so it slows everything else down on the laptop and I was worried it might start to over heat.
So, I don't think I'll be using the live stream often if I have to leave my laptop running all the time.

All these techno people on here. . I haven’t got a clue. My son set my system up from spy cameras/green feathers, onto my laptop, and only way I can tell if I have a visit etc is to have laptop on all day with it set to motion record. Am I running the risk of it overheating then? It does power right down, but don’t want to risk losing it altogether. Laptop not used for anything else. Sue
