We have had a female Blackbird as an almost full time resident in our back garden. She has decided to nest in our Ivy again. This has happened 5 times before with only one brood surviving the predation by Magpies. Unfortunately it looks like the nest position is in the Ivy over the back of the fence so I cannot easily locate it. Otherwise I could have easily relocated either my Coal Tit or Open fronted box cameras which are close by. Fingers crossed her latest clutch of eggs do not go the same way . We have not seen much of the local magpies this year, it could be they are a different pairs nesting at the end of our street.

Just an update. The Female stopped entering the ivy sometime last week. She still loves feeding in our garden as does her mate who is currently serenading me through our open patio doors just 5 ft away. She and her mate now fly away down the row of back gardens so I have come to the conclusion her first eggs were predated.
I tried to find the nest by climbing up some step ladders, leaning over the back fence and opening the ivy on the other side but it was too dense.
So another Blackbird nesting effort in my garden comes to nought!

What a pain Benn, it's so sad sometimes watching nature.

I may have been too hasty writing them off on Friday. Yesterday afternoon we watched as both Male and Female Blackbird re entered the ivy off our fence. Though not seen them today. It could be they are entering the the ivy from the field side where they are out of my vision. Just wish I could have found the nest and put a camera over it! Fingers crossed

Magpies are one bird I just can't bring myself to like, I know its nature and this happens but its just horrible! Never been a fan of magpies, Wouldn't wish them harm but I wouldn't want them in my garden either.

I feel the same as Paul, the Magpies will not get fed by me. They are mean, such a shame to see your blackbird eggs like this.

Yep Taz and Paul. Watched later as the female came and went due to her ingrained instinct. It takes hers a few weeks to get going again. Hate the buggers! There are simply too many of them. Nearly 20 times the numbers in the 1960's, but the bloody RSPB always plays this down!
