Hi all, Does anyone do or attempted to live stream their bird box feed on YouTube? I thought that it would be nice while the schools are closed for the children to watch a live feed to one of my bird boxes, I think they would enjoy the journey......that’s if I am lucky enough to get a nest! Any advice greatly received pleased

I did do it Amanda and it worked quite well, although occasionally it would crash and I would have to restart it. I was doing it from a raspberry pi, though, so I don't know if my experience will be of much help to you. What is your setup? There is a lot of info about this out on the web, so I'm sure we can set you up somehow! Are you getting visits at the moment? Having the live stream up was a lot of fun at the time, because other people on the forum were watching as well and posting about it - I think I first got alerted to the first egg hatching by a forum post!

Thanks Matt. I had a quick look last night but YouTube flashes up that live stream isn’t working. I actually couldn’t get passed putting my phone number in for verification! It said there was an error with my number, then about 10 minutes I got sent a code, but didn’t have a box to put it in. It has been very quiet up until today, a pair of blue tits have been in and out of the tree box. They have been cleaning it again. I don’t see too much of the great tits during the day. They also are visiting my garage box too.....well I think it is the same pair! How have you been been with your boxes, are you getting much interest? I saw an earlier post from you about Oak trees, there is a huge one in a few gardens up, it has a preservation order on it. It isn’t in any hurry to leaf, in fact none of the trees are! The hedgerow at the back is just starting to go green in very small areas, so I don’t think my birds are quite ready yet. I still have 2 roosters in each night. Fingers crossed for you Matt, I hope you get a nest soon By the way, what area of West Sussex are you from?

Nothing going on at all here, Amanda - really very quiet for about a week now. Hopefully things will pick with milder weather over the next week. Probably needs to happen in the next couple of weeks if it is going to happen I am south of Chichester, quite near the sea and quite rural. The big oaks near us are still not in leaf, as far as I can tell (from a distance), nor the birch. Hawthorn and elder are in leaf though. My one and only year with a nest, she started building on 8th April and didn't visit much beforehand, so hope is certainly not lost yet! Would be nice if they got on with it though

I love Chichester. I lived in Haywards Heath for many years. Well, excited today, a pair of blue tits have started building in my garage box, it was a lovely surprise this morning I didn’t think it was going to happen in this box, I thought I would have seen it first in the tree box I’m sure it will start for you very soon, don’t give up. My fingers are crossed for you

Yay, I am getting somewhere with streaming on YouTube! After many, many attempts I have managed to verify my account, eventually it worked using my landline number. Now I have to wait 24 hours. I have followed this: How to set up YouTube live streaming

Hi Amanda, Thats great....I have followed your instructions and have now done the same...I'm also now on the 24hr waiting period.
I hope to post the live stream to my three nephews and two nieces (ranging from age 2 to age 10) they are literally going insane with boredom at home....so we are hopeful this might spark a bit of interest in them.
All the bird have to do now is put on a great show! No pressure birds....

I got most of it sorted out, then my daughter was getting impatient with me, so I’ve had to put it down for now. I managed to get it streaming according to the software, just didn’t get time to sort out the url, passwords and privacy. I will do it when she is in bed this evening, so will let you know how I get on.
It’s pretty straight forward, just a pain trying to get your account verified and then having to wait 24 hours for the account to activate

Great Amanda, I'll be interested to hear how you get on.
I'm having difficulties here with it...my YouTube stream account is now active - Great...but I cannot get my RTSP url link to work from my HikVision DVR....just can't work out why it will not work? I've tried a number of combinations.
Won't work on VLC media player either....
So, my url is obviously wrong.

No, I mean I thought I needed to get a RTSP network link from my camera into the OBS Studio software, so that I can use that information to then stream it to Youtube?
Or is this not necessary?
It looks something like this?
Example: rtsp://192.168.1.210:554/Streaming/Channels/101

Try 102 at the end, try using the sub stream instead of the main stream.
rtsp://192.168.1.210:554/Streaming/Channels/102
What camera do you have, I will have a search for you
Im off to play with Abi now, so will be back later on this evening

Thanks Amanda,
I think the RTSP url is correct as I'm getting an image up on OBS, but its just a really really crappy one. I'll try the sub stream now. P.s that IP address in my above post was a made up one to use as an example...it is not my actual IP address....
But no worries, I'll keep working away here and see if there is something I can do. I'm enjoying trying to work it out...learning a lot!!!
My set up is a HikVision DVR using a Sony 700TVL Effio bird box camera on Channel 1.

Good luck Benn....hope it goes plain sailing for you! I'm still scratching my head here....I have a very pixilated image alright, but I think the resolution is too low and thats why it wont work properly Not sure how to change the resolution? Nothing seems to allow me to do that. I'll keep at it. Managed to live stream some 'footage' on YouTube, but it is not worth even looking at, as the image is so dreadful.

Double click on the camera in the source box on OBS Studio It brings up a menu and you can change the buffer, currently set on 2MB, it put mine of full whack for now. I had also changed the bitrate, made that a bit higher. I’m not near my laptop at the minute, cooking tea, so I’m telling you by memory...... (at my age, it’s not very good! )

I think I'm going to give up on this....upped the buffer from 2mb to 14mb and then changed the bitrate up to 4000. Perhaps that was too high as it just crashed the programme.
Time to call it a day I think.
I'm better than I was this morning though...at least I know my RTSP link is correct and the YouTube is working fine, if I can just get it to actually stream at an acceptable level.
Just can't work out why the image is so terribly crap. I didn't think my camera was a bad one??? What are other people using?
Thanks Amanda for the assistance... I'll be at it again tomorrow I'm sure.
