Hi ,everyone. Very late joining you all this year , glad to see so much activity going on ,here’s hoping everyone will have a good spring and summer. Was tempted to remove camera for this year after three successive years with nothing but drama. Left it too late as we had a rooster in by October and thought oh well surely next time everything will be fine.
Well rooster has found himself a wife and nest building began in earnest a week or so ago. Trouble is ,masses of material brought in early morning but this last couple of days by evening it’s all disappeared again. Both birds roosting at night female in corner and male up on the window sill . I know they do sometimes take out some of the nesting stuff but to take almost everything out. 😩 I’m wondering if another female is stealing it. Has anyone had this happen ?

Hi Chrisp, good to see you. I do know it happens a lot with birds starting to build and then for some reason removing it. We are not sure why they do this but some think it’s when perhaps the timing is not quite right so they keep themselves interested and occupied. It’s as good a reason as I can give. If you look on ‘Greatbluehopeful’s thread you will see this is also happening for her. It looks as though they are just biding their time. Good luck and hope it all works out well for you. Sue

Welcome back Chris They certainly keep our minds active, with the 5 W's WHO, WHAT ,WHEN, WHERE, WHAT, WHY, its seems there are different twists to the start of this season. Good luck with your nest box,

Hi Chris...yes, as Sue said I'm also having the "material going in and out" trick. One day last week the female took absolutely everything out, after all her hard work?
But then started back up again the next day bringing more back in again...doesn't make sense to me....but whatever! They have their reasons.
Best of luck with the new season!

I’m afraid I haven’t been keeping up to date with everyone’s posts lately but on catching up today I see we are having the usual dramas 😩 . After three bad years I’m trying to be a bit more detached to all the horrible things that are nature that we can do nothing about. Will just give update on our nest.
Our pair had 10 eggs . All hatched and are nearly a week old . I started using the caged feeder back in the winter with nuts and sunflower hearts in it. When nest building began I put in mealworms and they took to them straight away and have been using them to feed chicks . How things will go on with so many in the nest remains to be seen. She can hardly cover them at night and they have a lot more growing to do.
Here’s hoping this lovely weather continues and everyone has a good season.
Chris.

Hi everyone, I’m sorry I’ve been really bad at keeping up to date with everything this year . Anyway, have read most posts and a big well done to everyone and congrats to Paul on his Spring Watch item. After 5 successive years of something going wrong, this year has been text book ok. Two very good parents , a decent deep nest (no kicking the chicks out this year) and constant feeding of.mealworms. All 10 fledged 3 weeks ago and were brought back to feeder after a few days. They are now feeding themselves mealworms and fat balls . I’m having to ration them as I think they’d just sit in the tree eating worms all day as fast as I could fill the feeder.😳 I don’t know if all 10 are still there as it’s impossible to count them . I’m pretty sure at least 7 are around but they flitter around so much I don’t know if I’ve counted some of them twice.. I’ve had no trouble with Live foods direct . One order took an extra day to come but that was when the PO was struggling. Now they are coming next day as usual. Hope everyone has a good ending to this season when we can all do with cheering up . 👍
Chris.

Hi Chris So glad you had a successful nest this year. Wow 10 fledged is great going. I know what you mean about the mealworms. We have to ration ours to but they queue up almost at mealtimes. I get them from Livefood Direct too and fingers crossed have had no problems. I know the hot weather and postage has caused a few delays though. Hope you manage to count them all soon if they keep still long enough 🙂
