If it takes this long to feed one chick, it's a good job they didn't have 7 or 8!

Thanks Karen - It just goes to show some of the behaviour that we are privileged to having a camera in the box.

Lovely to see the little guy being so well looked after, even if it does take 2 mins to get it into his gob!!!

Beechnut, they are so sweet wonder if this is their first breeding season? Had my first glimpse this year (today) of a GT came to pinch a meal worm, no change there then?

Thanks for your comments guys, and Kathy I think it's certain that they are 1st time parents - I have never witnessed anything like this in the umpteen years I've had boxes. According to the RSPB 1st time nesting (G)tits do often only have a couple of eggs as a first brood, so I suppose by the law of averages I'd draw the short straw eventually.
One thing that is concerning me a little, I realise that only one chick doesn't need the same number of feeding visits to the nestbox as a cup full of nestlings, but despite Meg leaving the box quite frequently, I have yet to see her come back with any food for Little Tim, Mac is doing all the food collection, even if it's nearly always too large for Tim to swallow and needs softening up or breaking down!
I wonder if Meg thinks that the egg is still viable and is continuing to incubate it, and Tim is benefitting from the warmth at the same time?
As long as Tim continues to fill a greater volume of the cup each day, I'll put that theory to the back of my mind.(While I've typed the last 3 paragraphs, she has been out 3 times and returned with nothing each time!).

Beechnut we have so much to learn from them don't we, it does look like they are a little at sea so to speak but we are looking at it from a human perspective perhaps and we shouldn't worry at all. Yes, Tim will need the warmth of his mother more being an only chick so far. I hope that she realizes this and stays with him if the temp drops. I have fingers crossed for all of this family.

Well he's definitely no longer 'tiny Tim' anyway. He's lovely just sitting there...such a shame his sibling didn't make it.

I think i might have the same problem as you Beechnut my female ( bob ) seems to spend a lot of time sitting on the chicks.

Shouldn't worry about that yet Pete, it's quite normal in the first 24 hrs or so - chicks can survive on what they ingested in the egg, but do need the warmth.

Firstly congratulations Beechnut oh Tiny Tim is so lovely (sorry, little Tim), such a shame about his/her sibling, one positive thing though Beechnut is if this is first time parents, there is definitely room for next few years, especially if Meg likes that nestbox eh?! I’ll try to keep bobbing in to see how he/she is coming on, All will be well Take care Beechnut Elle xx

Thanks Guys - Weather a bit grotty here today, damp and dull and not so warm. Meg has been doing plenty of nest snuggling, but managed to catch her away for a change, and Mac tempting with a tasty snack. Tim is beginning to sprout his feathers on various parts of his body - I love his little stub of a tail!
