Thanks GBH, I suppose it is easier to see the progress when there is only one chick in the nest!
I've posted this video which shows Meg displaying her motherly instinct to protect her youngster. I checked outside the bedroom window when I saw the episode on the monitor, but nothing ominous out there - it may have been sparrows that were on the fence, spider hunting round the Wallbox.

Very aggressive Beechnut must have been something she was trying to fend off even if you couldn't see it, like you say maybe something landed on the box?

Mac has found the mini mealies I put in the feeder yesterday, sited in the plum tree. At least I know that there won't be problems with feeding Tim!

Yes Paul, both parents are feeding mealworms - not all the time, they are varying the diet. Just now Tim was so well fed that he actually refused a mealie brought in by Meg, so she ate it herself.

I have never fed mine mealworms. I have a lot of oak trees in and behind the garden and it appears there is enough food there every year. There are also white thorn bushes where they seem to get food also. I think it's impossible to get mealies here in Ireland.

Hi Hardy, didn't realise you were also from Ireland... or had forgotten.
I'll pop you a message over on your own thread regarding mealies.

Amazing photo showing how much ‘tiny’ Tim has grown against the size of the egg Beechnut. Obviously one spoiled and well fed chick. Sue

Meg has brought in more soft stuff on the last 3 visits this morning - not really sure why, there's plenty strewn around the top of the nest already!

I have noticed that the female in my box brings in some nesting material on each return visit, without fail....even though there appears to be enough.
Maybe it gives them something to do? A reason to leave the box for a short while...

They do tend to do that while they are incubating GBH but I can't say that I've noticed it before when they are feeding.
9 consecutive feeds of a mealie in the last feeding frenzy, by both parents!

I'm not building my hopes up Pete - but I reckon they certainly need more practice on the second stage of reproduction!

My little fella's getting well feathered up now, preening and wing stretching. The mini mealies are still being fed regularly - Mac is often bringing 2 or 3 at a time.

Will he be able to get out the hole of the box by time he's due to leave beechnut? That is the question!

I'll loosen the screws on the box front when it gets nearer the day Paul! Seriously though, this might be the first fledge taken from outside that I miss since being on a forum, as there won't be the usual jousting to see who is brave enough to take the plunge, and much fluttering up to the box 'attic' and down again, which is usually the signal to take up my position in the spare bedroom with video camera, coffee and toast and just wait for the first claws appearing on the edge of the hole and a head poked through. The inside view will hopefully take care of itself with the recorder.

He’ll certainly get a shock when he gets to the other side and has to fend for himself after being so spoilt
