Sad update. On looking at two clips prior to the last one. I found these. Robin being spooked off the nest and then the dastardly Great tit destroying an egg. I cannot help but feel that our Robin had started to incubate and that the Great Tit spooking her has compromised the nest site. Not seen her about the garden since. Here are the sad clips:

Doubt it Paul! I saw the same Great tit rummaging through our other bush of Ivy looking for insects the other day.
Expected a Magpie but a bloody Great Tit!!!!!

Benn, this is awful. Why would a great tit do that? The egg is no threat and certainly no use to him, why on earth would a great tit do this? Beyond comprehension. So sorry for the poor robin and you. Guess we still have a lot to learn about nature. Sue

So sorry for you that has happened Ben - I was really looking forward to watching my first robin's nest through to fledging. This season is turning out to be the most unpredictable ever!

Thanks for all your sympathy and concern. I have purposely waited 36 hours to give an update as I wanted to make sure nothing further happened. The Robin briefly returned on Sunday afternoon but the good news is that she returned at 6am on Monday morning and has been incubating since . She is sat on 5 or 6 eggs (sometimes there is one at the back of the nest) One of the eggs has a hole in it from the pecking of the Great tit but at least 4 are viable. A clip below shows her mate coming in this morning to feed her. I have ordered some mealworms to see if I can help them out. The second is our blue tit making some weird noises. I think this is the male trying to entice his female into the box. I will set up my live feed by 9:35am this morning.

Benn im so pleased to hear that the robin is still continuing with her laying and sitting, and lucky to have a blue tit nest also, you have so much to keep you occupied. keep sending the clips, as i haven't got a nest and neither has Sue, Matt, GBH, we can enjoy them Benn

Great news with both your nests Ben, I'm especially pleased about the robin, as I've already said, I'll be able to follow a Robin's nest through to fledging for the first time!
Good luck with both, and please keep the vids coming in.

So pleased your robin has returned Benn, let’s hope the eggs go on to hatch successfully . Robins nests are so vulnerable to predation because of the openness of them. So happy for you with both nests. Really strange noises in the blue tit box, not heard anything like that before. Sue

I am not sure Amanda. 5 mins later the same thing happened for a much shorter period and the female then came in and he quickly left. I dunno why he still thinks he has to attract her to box as she has spent the last 5 days building almost non stop!!!

Benn, must say I'm very relieve to hear your Robin is back - it must have been an awful uneasy wait to see what would happen I hope the egg that the GT peaked didn't pierce the inner membrane...you might still have 5 intact? Time will tell.
As for the Blue Tit calls...yes, that is a first for me too...I've never heard that type of chirping before??? I wonder what it could mean....why so different than the usual beckoning call???
