Oh that’s brilliant Karen. Laughed at you doing your mother hen thing keeping babies safe. Because i’ve Only ever seen them after the fledging i’ve Had several land on the ground or low bushes etc and does seem like they take longer to get airborne from lower down. However, they do seem to hide themselves quite well and climb bushes to get a higher point for take off, so all should be ok. Sue ps, superb video Karen, really well put together. At least when they land on the ground it gives a great photo opportunity , silver cloud and all that.

Thanks sue, this fleding lark is so stressful , they all seem ok, have found some safe areas, can hear them nearby chirping and have seen mum and dad tending to them. I need a year to recover now!

You can download movie maker for free here for windows 10 - www.winmoviemaker.com/I've had it on my windows 10 laptop for few years now, You need to download it through windows essentials which means its like a windows package thing But you unclick the other windows programs included during download and it will only download movie maker. Just scroll down and it tells you exactly how to download it and stuff step by step.

www.birdfood.co.uk/lausanne-nest-boxJust after a bit of advice folks, I have acquired a box like this and it is only 9cmx9cm in the bottom of the box, is this too small? The nest area is tiny compared to my tree box which Molly choose, I cant imagine 7 chicks in there, it does get wider as it goes higher so a nest would sit higher but just wondered what your thoughts were on the internal size on boxes.

Agree it seems small Karen, but I suspect it is fine. I've been making these concrete nest boxes with 11-12 cm circular base, and it is surprising how small they look inside (circle looks quite a bit smaller that 12x12 square, at least to me!). We know these small circular ones work, at least, because they are the measurements used by Schwegler for some of their blue tit boxes and by all accounts there work very well. Bear in mind that the nest itself is usually a good couple of inches in height, so the measurement for the chicks should be taken, say, 2.5 inches up from the bottom. How wide is it there? Having a smaller base low down might make it slightly easier on mum anyway, as it is less space to fill with nesting material. I would assume anyway that the makers/sellers of this box design have had success with it in the past?

Cheers Matt, yes it is a couple of cms bigger a couple of inches up. Thats a good point regarding needing less material at the bottom, you have put my mind at rest now I plan on using this instead of an homemade on which is getting tatty.

Hi Karen, My Aldi box with the Great Tits this year is quite small....and the entrance hole is quite shallow. But they didn't seem to mind.
My other boxes on the other hand are deep and the floor area is bit bigger - I'll have to wait until next year to see how they go of course!

Thanks for that gbh,do you think they lay a certain number of eggs depending on the size they have to use?

Perhaps...but then when you think of Beechnuts box this year...there was only 2 eggs laid initially. Thats a big box.
So...size maybe not a factor?

Just noticed that next door now have a brand new nest box replacing the old tatty one that had a lot of interest last year and this year but not chosen. I cant quite see the front of it but it is bright blue and in the same position as the last one, so next year will be interesting with that box and the next neighbour along having added one too
