Wow - sorry to hear that Paul! Sometimes it is such a trial watching these poor birds. Benn - I was Googling around about disturbing nests, and apparently birds will often take to a new nest box nearby if the entire nest + chicks are moved into it. Could this be worth a try? Do you have any suitable nest boxes that they could use? I understand what you are saying about the hassle your neighbours are going through, but maybe this could be an attempt at some sort of solution? I had a conversation with the neighbours this morning who are happy to try but I could only save one nest. However, the better news is that it is only the scaffolding going up on Monday. The roofers might not start for up to another 10 days due to a backlog of work and availability of enough of the right tiles. I think the chicks would be about 9 or 10 days old as they have been taking in food for about that long. So another 6 days at most they should have fledged and with the scaffolding in place I can stuff up the gaps with rags. I shall keep you updated

That is great news Benn. You nearly had a mob on your hands marching up the moors with pitchforks and torches!! ha,ha!! "Stay clear of the moors" etc, etc..ha,ha!!! Nah, I understood that of course, its never straight forward. Its a tricky situation alright, especially when neighbour relations are involved and its not your roof!!. I'm sure if they could have done it another time they would have....but great to hear that they were open to the suggestion of moving a nest. I think I was just hopeful that it wouldn't happen, knowing the law is on the birds side...and that the roofers would know this anyway and hold off but, as it turns out, it looks like the birds are saved by a timing technicality!! Fate has intervened...Yay!!!

On a more positive note my little wren's got 7 eggs today and she isn't sitting yet so looks like egg 8 tomorrow and maybe she will sit then we will see, Nice large clutch off her though food supply in the garden must be good.

Hi Paul, I'm so sorry to hear that your little sparrow chicks have been predated again. I remember this happened last year to them & how upset you were then, so it's even worse that history has repeated itself this year. At least you have Jenny Wren trying to help you, so perhaps some comfort for you.

Paul, that is illegal at nesting time but seems it has been noted by those builders. Pardon me I am editing after reading your post properly, rushing again I fear!
Sorry to read about your attacked Sparrows obviously this is natural behaviour even though it seems awful to us.

Oh Paul, can’t believe this has happened to your sparrows again, beyond upset for you and your sparrows. Glad to hear the wren is still laying and that you will have a distraction with that lovely nest. Keeping everything crossed that the sparrows, next to you Benn, manage to fledge before the roofers get going. Always worries me at this time of year when you see people hedge cutting as well as structural works. Guess we birders are far more sensitive to these issues as we think of nesting birds at this time, whereas a lot of people just don’t think of or consider them at all. Sue

Little video update of Dolly's chicks, Now 8 days old. These videos was from yesterday evening, Dolly goes on a mealworm feeder binge none stop until all the chicks are well fed. Normally does it the same time every night!
Ditzy chicks are due to hatch on Thursday / Friday, And our wren is sitting now, 8 eggs she laid still another 10 days before they hatch.
Anyway here is the little video of Dollys brood.

Just seen the posting about your sparrows Paul - So sorry to hear that, I am feeling it with you, and they say lightning never strikes the same place twice. I didn't realise that sparrows were that vicious - so sad and so angry too.

Thats brilliant Paul...ha, ha!!! That parrot is a bruiser!! What a winning personality! yahoo_clap Leo is an absolute beaut...so regal and poised and Little Lady looks like a little sweetheart. Ah I miss bloody Spooky...! Its so ridiculous after all the turmoil - but I do like cats!! Just not their outdoor instincts!!! We are toying with the idea of getting two little rabbits from a friend - a brother and a sister which we will get neutered - they were just born this week in a litter of 10 - they are a cross between a lop-earred and a lionshead if that means anything? It will be a consolation prize to my two kids after handing Spooky away. We'll see....need to really think about it - we have until July before we can get them as they'll be weaning for approx 8 weeks.
