I'm sticking to my guns Matt to me that is definitely a female in the box, when she opens her beak at the beginning of the vid you would normally hear a sort of hissing sound telling the male to go away. So to me it looks like you might have a female interested in your box.

I agree Pete, my female does the same, every time he goes near she hisses at him to go away and she doesnt cower down like the males do. PLEEEASE I hope she picks your box Matt.

Yes I am with Pete and Karen on this after watching the video twice, The one is the box is female, That is the usual behaviour they do when the male comes to the hole. Its normally like "Yes I am still in here p*ss off now" Really got everything crossed for you Matt.

Right OK, I am out voted She didn't come back, though. If she is interested, I wonder what she is waiting for? No visits to any of the other boxes but this box has had visits most days in the past week. Could she have chosen it? Why so late? The plot thickens! Surely she doesn't have a nest elsewhere already, or could she just be keeping an eye on a backup location if required?

To me that looked like quite a positive visit in that vid Matt, have all the visits this week been like that?

Seems quite promising Matt, I have to agree I really believe it was a female.
Here's keeping everything crossed for you

Could be a number of reasons Matt, second female to the male, or her first choice of nest's been disturbed / failed. I think if her nest had been disturbed she would be straight into building no waiting about because she would be in a rush. So very likely it could be a second female, Or even something's happened to the males first female so he's paired up again with a female without a male. Honestly got everything crossed for you though, You deserve a nest after all work you've put into your boxes Matt!

Hi Matt, hope you get a nest ! Blue tits are more complicated in behaviour than great tits, thats for sure. And they are cousins more or less

Thanks all. Obviously it would be nice if it happens but I'm not getting my hopes up. Pete this is definitely the longest visit in that box for a while, but one or the other of them have been in most mornings over the last week. If they are thinking of nesting, then I really don't know what they are waiting for - weather is glorius here, and everything is in leaf.

I agree Matt. I was confused by Male nest wriggles. Male usually disappears when female arrives.
Good signs either way though!

I really am hoping that something comes of this. Wouldn't it be brilliant!!!!
Just when you mention everything being in leaf...
I went out this morning to seek out the Oak trees in the area.
I found a large, mature one nearby and at present, there is only tight buds still, a small hint of green starting at the tips of the buds but absolutely no leaves at all yet anywhere on the tree.
Is this a deciding factor to when they start building?
If so, is it possible I can hold out hope for another few weeks?

I think our local bluetits wait until the big oaks nearby are in leaf, as this is where they seem to spend most of their time feeding when the chicks hatch. It might also explain why they seem to nest a little later around me than they do, for example, with Paul who is much further north. It is just a theory tho! But it does make sense that any birds would be in tune with the predominant local food source.

Hey that’s great Matt, I hope these visits turn in to a nest I have to agree with the others, I think the bird in the box is a female. I’ll be stalking your posts now!

DO NOT GET EXCITED PAUL! Just another visit for about 2 1/2 mins this morning with both of them. No material, and now buggered off for the day again (so far, at least). What are they doing?

Such amazing quality Matt! I think its only a positive that both Male / Female are looking still, The fact its a pair and still looking shows shes not got a nest yet. I hope she picks your box! The whole coming of a morning thing seems to be the norm when its "will they won't they stage" I do believe its a second female at this stage, It bonds with the lateness into the "season" and her being in no real rush. I think if it was a disturbed nest she would be in a rush to get building, Judging by what you are saying she's in no rush at all. You know nest building started last month for your neighbours so everything at the moment is pointing to a second female I think which is great for you if she picks the box! I honestly have everything crossed for you, I think if she is going to start building it will be during this week.

2 1/2 min's is quite a long visit in my books Matt, i've had it like this in fact only last year long visits, short visits, no visits for quite a while then back to visits short/long then BANG nest material coming in. So as long as you are still getting visits its all positive.

Yeah, don't want to get my hopes up, but hard to at least a little after this upturn in interest. Now I am thinking that I need to swap the camera in this box. Quality is OK, but I have higher res cameras in two of my other boxes which also have microphones, so should I risk a midnight swap? Might make the inside of the ceiling look a little different though, so wonder if that would affect things? Or probably I should just be happy there is a bit of interest and leave well alone!
Pete, I have only had a nest one year (out of 3, including this one), and it was like you describe. A few visits, nothing for a while, then she came back, did one wiggle and was building 5 minutes later. In fact, that year, I never got anything like as many wiggles as I have already had this year. If she is thinking of nesting, she is really taking her time! I wonder if she has another candidate box on the go as well? If so, it isn't any of the other 4 in my garden.

Quality is more than fine Matt! Its possible she is looking at a few nest options, You know they check out everywhere. But like Pete says, Until the visits stop I would be hopeful with it being a pair!

Good that there is still an interest, Matt, hope nesting starts soon, its a long time to keep waiting after a morning visit, but maybe today it will pick up, really hope for you Matt

Didn't she started building in march though Pete then you had a half built nest getting interest off GT aswell (probably scared BT away) then during May the BT came back? Or was it a different BT? or was that even you

Yes paul that was sort of what happened, but i think it was a different pair of BT's or definatly a different female that restarted nest building. If i remember rightly there was quite a gap before i started getting visits again.
