So confused, I had a rooster in one of my side boxes lastnight, I cleared all my boxes out the end of last month when the sparrows had their last brood. Anyway this morning, This female blue tit is bringing material into the side box she slept in lastnight! As she picked this box for spring already? turned my camera on this morning to see moss in the box and her bringing a beak full in must say its shocked me, Never happened before. Just put little video of her in the box on twitter

RSPB have just private messaged me on twitter and think she is "claiming" the box I have had this happen before in November with 1 piece of moss but she's brought about 5 beaks full in so far. See if she roosts again tonight, I'll keep you posted. Hope it is her claiming the box for next year and not just a very confused bird!

Oh my goodness Paul. What a strange thing to happen.. obviously very keen or very confused. Bodes well for your box though, will watch now and again with interest. Got two boxes with cameras now Paul but haven’t thought to look for anything this early. Sue

Oh Sue, Two camera boxes now?! How did you pull that off with the hubby? So pleased for you gives you double the chance next year! I know as I said Sue it’s only happened once before but that was November not August and it was just 1 piece of moss! I think it shows these little birds start thinking about breeding long before spring arrives, Here’s a little picture of it now if you compare it to the video above you’ll see she’s added more since the video, A lot of tapping the entrance hole aswell.

Hi Paul and Ann, very much had my son on my side re boxes. Had a friend make me a new box (with three holes so it mimics my concrete lucky box) and made hubby feel very guilty about not being able to use it. Son and I got together and persuaded hubby that it made sense. Wires all hidden behind down pipes so maybe not in perfect positions but will wait and see. Cannot watch both at same time but at least got two options or chances now. Sue So intrigued with your box Paul - fascinating.

Love it Sue It is in the same place the "Lucky" box was or it is somewhere else? You'll have to get a picture of show us your new box! Haven't seen the female for about 2 hours now, She had a little nap in the box and did a nest wriggle and went. I'm guessing she will roost again tonight, I think its just a case of her liking the box and thinking about it as a roosting spot over winter that could lead to nesting spring. She doesn't look a young bird so she's probably produced a few broods and knows about finding somewhere safe come spring, Guess she is just marking it as "Hers" would is great news for me Just got to hope nothing happens to her over Autumn / Winter now because it looks like she is liking the side box.

Well, top image is new box a friend made to my specifications with plenty of room for camera and wires. Bottom picture is camera box I already had but now with two holes cut in the front (just in case they like it). Used the frame with foliage around this box because in wrong position and will get more sunlight, also right next to a window so gives the birds more privacy (or that’s the theory). Both boxes are right next to downpipes on bungalow so wires are taken down behind pipes and a hole drilled through wall at bottom of wall to take connections into my dining room/ lounge (one each end). Lounge end the connectors come in behind a cabinet to keep hubby happy, other end they are hidden under a little table with a lamp on. Can only use one end or other by moving my laptop so if either get used that is the one I will concentrate on. Not perfect , but gives me two chances and wires hidden to keep hubby happy. loving your little blue tit roosting Paul. Roll on next season - can’t wait now - wishing my life away ,

What a difference a day makes since my last visit! I'll have to try and check this forum twice a day if I can - all the photos are great & show such detail. Wonderful news Paul about your blue tit rooster & I hope everything goes well for her until next Spring. I'm very pleased to read your news about your son backing you up Sue & your new box is very classy & a good idea of yours to have front holes in your other box, so definitely for you, Paul, Karen & everybody else for next Spring.

I have two roosters now, This female who is bringing nest material in. Plus a male in the handykam box which is just down the house from this side view box! Female hasn't brought any new material in now, Just plenty of daily time visits cleaning any overnight poo out and of course roosting. So I think its safe to say she is just claiming the box which shows these birds are thinking about breeding long before we're lead to believe! Fingers crossed nothing happens to her over Autumn / Winter because it looks like she could nest in this box next year.

Hmm, I don't recognise the female Karen no, Its 100% not "Tatty" who give me a nest this year that is for sure. She doesn't look a young female though, She's currently nest wriggling as I am typing this! The male on other hand, I think he's our local male that's been knocking about a few years. Our local male always seems to use the handykam box to roost every autumn / winter. Very comfy in the box and knows it well so am guessing that is him.

OMG Paul what the hell as gone on there?? just popped in for a quick read and come across this post. This is so amazing, it made me switch my tv on to have a look at my cameras, even though we haven’t cleaned them out yet (been too busy holidaying it up!) Hope it does mean she’s taken it for spring!, or is she trying to tell us it’s gonna be a bad winter and need extra bedding to keep warm!? Elle xx
