Not seen an hedgehog in the garden for years now, However the last few nights we've had one visiting for food and water. Comes between 11pm / 12am every night, With its visits being regular now I have ordered an hedgehog house and going to rig it up with a camera, I'll put the food inside the house and be able to watch it on the camera. I am hoping others start to follow it and we end up with a few in the garden.
Here's some pictures I posted on twitter anyway

Thank you, I know most of you probably see them nightly but around here you barely see them like you used too, So I am pleased its knocking about and becoming a regular in the garden. The hedgehog house as been ordered should be here next week so hopefully get some nice footage when its all set up with a camera inside.
I'll keep you posted!

We don't see any hedgehogs at all here Paul as all the fences have concrete bases with no holes in them - it was like that when we moved here. It's wonderful news to us that all new houses being built from now on, have to have holes in their fence bases the size of a CD, so that hedgehogs have a hedghog run.
This is the only hedgehog I've got:

Aww that is cute Diane I am shocked how lack of hedgehogs reported in gardens now, I have had people say on twitter they haven't had them for years either. Hopefully next week when I get the hedgehog house i'll get some nice video footage of it inside there having its food. I'll post little update when the hedgehog house arrives now!

So I am hoping over the coming weeks it may bring the hoglets to the garden for food, Looking forward to the hedgehog house arriving next week! Anyway here's the video it is 5 minutes long shows it eating and having a drink of water really enjoying having it around lovely to watch

Thank you Natalie, Its literally my iphone placed in the garden by the feeding dish just recording! I'm not very "tech" normally when you put the cat food out and he/she gets a smell of it then it arrives within 5 minutes or so, I have to refill the dish few times a night for it eats alot! I'm glad you like the video anyway

Even better news Paul!
Whilst we have never seen Hedgehogs in our back garden due to its enclosed nature, many of my neighbours had them visit in the 1990's. I know its a horrible way of assessing the HH population but around here I used to see at least 2-3 roadkill per week in the 90's. The last 10 years not a single one until this year when I have come across two. Perhaps they are on the increase again. Many people blame the use of slug killing pellets but far more of these and other garden pesticides were used in the 70's ,80's and 90's when Hedgehog were higher in number.
I hope your HH take to your new box!

I think the lack of hedgehogs is few reasons to be honest Benn, Road kills, Not enough people leaving room for them to travel from garden to garden due to walls and fences, I read alot get killed in bonfires when they go in the wood to sleep so I think its just a number of reasons. I did read the other day though we are down to just 1 million hedgehogs across the UK now from around 30 million back in the 1950s. Its such a huge drop in numbers for them, I just feel lucky they've started coming into my garden. Its funny story aswell, We got new neighbours few doors down around 6 months ago, They have a cat and it kept coming into our front garden so we fed it abit now it comes pretty much all day fed 3 times a day and acts like our cat second home and all. But this is the reason cat food as been left out at night in the front garden for the last few months, So without realising the hedgehogs have picked up on it and been visiting probably, It wasn't until I seen one I started really putting food out for it! Guess I have my new neighbours cat to thank for attracting them by coming for food from us

They do say dog and cat food is the best, and never milk and white bread!

Lovely to see Paul. Happy for you. We have two that visit every so often, we created an hedgehog highway or them in the fence and built a house, I dont think they have used the house yet. Our dog goes crazy if she sees one though and probably thinks she is doing a good job alerting us of these these strange creatures invading her home!

Paul & Karen - I don't know if the following information about hedgehogs is correct or not - so please don't shoot the messenger! I watch "Beechgrove" on Thursday nights on BBC Scotland & last night there was a visit to a ladies wildlife garden. She had a couple of houses for hedgehogs, because she said they won't share a house with another adult one, which was something I didn't know. This episode is repeated on BBC 2 this coming Sunday at 8.30a.m. if you care to watch or record it. BTW Karen, a lady shows how to create a mini pond as well, but it's not as nice or as good as yours!

One of the hogs has been inside the hedgehog house twice now, No overnight sleeping yet. The first night it did stay in the straw for around 30 minutes before going out though, Hopefully one of them use it come winter to hibernate!

Karen, I don't think so, The bigger one of the two only comes once a night between 1am - 2am, The smaller one is here pretty much all night from 10pm. Ann, That is great you have two regular, They need all the help they can get it seems. Lastnight the smaller one of the two used the hedgehog house for a hour nap, The snoring was unbelievable! Its made a little "den" in the straw its like a dome and hollow in the middle looks cosy i'll attach a picture isn't the greatest picture to show the den but you can kinda see it. I'm glad its using the hedgehog house for longer each stay, Atleast now it knows somewhere dry and cosy for it to hibernate come winter if it wants!

Just to add to the post above, Here's a little picture of it popping its head out the "den" its made inside the hog house! Can't see a thing when it goes in there due to the den, Atleast its making it cosy inside the hedgehog house though that is the main thing!
