Hi I thought I would share a few pictures of my garden, this is still work in progress. I try now to plant shrubs and flowers that attract our bumblebees. As you can see the laurel bush to the left is where my blackbirds are nesting. Im popping out next week to stock up on bird feed and a new water bath.

Oooh Kevin, I wish I could swap gardens with you or Elle, both are lovely sizes when you're as old as I am! Your laurel bush is a lovely size, mine is about 3 feet tall or 36" (just under a metre?) one trunk and about 6 branches coming off it, so quite thin. I read they grow like the clappers & thicken out quickly just like leylandii conifers which is what I want - I don't have to worry about it getting 18 feet high & even wider - that will be the new owners problem.

Thanks Diane for your nice comments. The laurel bush grows rapidly in the warmer months and then it produces a lovely cream flower which is followed by a dark grape like fruit. The wasps and bees love the flowers and the birds get their fill from the fruit. The grassed area is going to extended further back soon.

Nice little garden Kevin, Do you have any bird boxes in place for the blue tits / great tits etc? Might be worth putting one up, Looking at your garden I'd imagine it be nice little place for blue tit to raise a family.

Hi Paul I have a homemade bird box on the side of the shed but I don’t know if the hole is large enough.

That is way to small Kevin, You need a hole size of atleast 25mm (blue tit) I would recommend a 32mm hole though, This opens it up to Blue tits, Great Tits and Sparrows. So gives the box a better chance of success.

I will take the box down and check it over before widening the hole as I noticed a wasp going into to it the other day.

Hey Kevin - having another look at your garden photos, I noticed something that I missed before! You have a dog! What's it called? We used to have dogs, all black labradors, now too old to get another as we can't give it the exercise it should have anymore, so we have a grand-dog now called Dudley - a labradoodle - so halfway there at least!

Hi Diane my little Jack Russel is called Max and he is 6years old. I would be lost without him and he loves the garden and very long walks. Diane I have added a few pictures that were in my wood pigeon thread.

Kevin! Quote: "my little Jack Russel is called Max" - that's funny, as our last dog was a rescued black lab already called Max - he was 2 when we got him, so we didn't change his name. The previous black lab we bought as a puppy in Constantine, Cornwall, so I went to the library looking for a Cornish name for him - Kye - which is Cornish for dog, so you can't get more basic than that! BTW, found out years later that I am not only related to the seller's wife, but Constantine is where my paternal Ancestors come from, plus County Durham as you already know.
The little tree to the left of the bird bath, what is that please as it looks lovely (as does the rest of your garden shrubs.}

Hi Diane thanks for your lovely and comments and sharing your beloved dogs with me. The tree to the left of the bird bath is a plum tree which I only planted last year.

It looks lovely Kevin - you have a Californian Lilac as well - mine has faded now, so not as blue as it was. My newly purchased laurel has sprouted buds as you said it would, but horror of horrors, something has eaten nearly half of some of the leaves (about seven of them).

Well with Autumn upon us my garden has gone slightly quiet. The usual wood pigeons and collard doves visit. I have had a couple of sighting of a little field mouse stocking up on food before it snuggles down to hibernate. over the next month I plan to replenish the gravel part of the garden. I also plan to put another feeding station in the garden which will be concreted in before it becomes to cold.

Sounds as though you're going to be busy Kevin with what you're going to do. Have you thought about buying or making a hog house for your garden, as you may be lucky with one as other members are?
