Hi all,
Not posted over the last year, change in job role and very busy with completing a uni course. Been keeping any eye on all your updates and boxes though, quite eggciting. My box has not been used for the last 4 years after we lost a neighbouring tree. Prior to that we always had blue tits nesting, last year we took the plate off the entrance to try and entice Great tits, still no joy though.
On Saturday, I noticed some material appeared in the box (nothing new there though), but that is where it has stopped during the last few years. Checked the box Sunday to see half the box filled with material. Monday, the nest had a nest cup, Tuesday the arrival of soft furnishings (aka feathers).
Today, the nest appears to be practically complete. Great tit has been bringing in more soft furnishings.
I'm guessing I could be in luck this year, I'm keeping everything crossed.
Better late than never,
Taz

Great to have you back with us Taz, I remember you touching on that last year on the old forum! Glad you have a full built nest by great tits this year though, don’t get many great tits on here so nice when you do! Look forward to your updates.

Thanks Wildlife Paul, The tree with the box looks very different since the neighbours chopped their tree down. It has really taken on a new life and provides plenty of shelter from the sparrowhawks that visit now and again. I am looking forward to see what happens next. The GT's have very different characteristics, especially their communications when she is in the box and he is perched outside.

Good to see you back Taz, and so hope your nest comes to fruition this year. Think it’s probably the up and down of the weather but we all seem to have had the will they won’t they on here. Do keep us posted as to when eggs appear etc. Good luck. Sue

Taz, welcome back from me too. Your bird news is great & I hope that the great tits carry on & you get some later on - do you have a camera in your box as I can't remember from the old forum?
After I saw a great tit fly into our box again this morning (nothing yesterday) I went out in our garden for a while & I noticed a change in the oak tree next door, pretty certain that it will be in leaf tomorrow, so maybe things will quicken up a bit now.

Thanks YorksherLass,
Yes, I do have a camera, I will need to set it up to record again though. I use a raspberry pi to record, so will start that up at the weekend.

Hi Taz, just to put record straight, my camera box NOT being used - yet again. Wish it was but they just don’t seem to like it, always choose the one without camera. Typical. Did get lots of visits early on but then decided they were camera shy. . Can’t be too cross cause at least I’ve got a nest being built, so far so good anyway. Sue

Things appear to be happening fast here. Tonight for the first time, my GT is roosting in the nest. Maybe she may lay an egg in the morning, fingers crossed . I've no experience of GT's nesting so far, I haven't even got round to giving her a name.
Think I'll call her Fluff, she has been playing about with the fluff a lot today, so seems a fitting name.

Welcome back Taz - It's good to have another GT box on here this year, as Paul says, we are very much in the minority. Two of us, Meryl and myself have nests with eggs that should be hatching next week, so you will know how we get on before yours are being incubated.
Anyway, good luck and I hope all goes well for you, maybe you'll get a bigger clutch than the 5 that Meryl and I have this time.

Thanks for the welcome back Elle and Beechnut.
Beechnut, looks like Fluff laid her first egg in the early hours. Difficult to see as she covered it really well. Things are looking up and I can check my progress against your two nests.

Just a little update, first two days in the box were obviously just for pleasure, free board. She has however laid 3 eggs. She is doing well, fingers crossed she keeps it up. I will post photos when I get the chance.

Thanks Beechnut,
I don't think she has finished yet, no signs of incubation at all, although she does come into the box earlier at the end of the day to just sit in the cup. Don't know if that is a sign she is getting ready?
