I like to try new things Sue, however it is a ever changing scene from year to year! The last 3 years the local Great Tits nested some way down at the end of the street, but used to enter and take numerous mealworms in the mealworm cage left out for Blue Tits. Now we have a pair nesting they will not use the perspex box or the cage but will take from an open tray! Trouble is our huge colony of House Sparrows eat the bloody lot within 20 mins!
However, I remembered something that Sparrows and Starlings are early to bed and late risers so I put some more out in the tray at 7:30pm tonight and it seemed to work with only a few sparrows and the Great Tits feeding their young with the mealworms rather than mostly sunflower heart bits! They were however still bringing in the odd green caterpillar and insect form time to time so that is good! Those green caterpillars seem so luminous green!

Both chicks fledged this morning unfortunately it was before I was up. Have seen mum at the feeder all day and caught sight of one of the chicks I hope they both make it

Finally! I have managed to get the GT's feeding the mealworms! Was getting a little worried as they were mostly feeding sunflower heart bits. I had to place a open tray just below the sunflower feeders so I guess they will be gone in 20 mins once the sparrows get to know. However, both parents have already brought in a dozen so I guess I will have to repeat on a daily basis. They might now take notice of my two other mealworm feeders that are sparrow proof but who knows!

Always puzzles me Pete why Blue tits seem to fledge so young with flight and tail feathers still under developed, many times I see them exposed on the ground to various predators.
My experience with past Great Tit broods seem to be suggest they wait a couple of days longer and look to have stronger flight ability when they leave. Then the Starlings camera boxes in the past show them are almost fully grown when they leave and they fly very well.
Great pics and video by the way!

Well mum did not return to the nest overnight... the remaining small baby died in the morning... then the third one didn't hang around for anything, within 15 minutes with a bit of encouragement it jumped up and after 3 minutes of coaxing and mum and dad on the look out, went for it and cleared our garden into the adjoining fields... (WARNING - Video has dead bird in nest cup) 12 mins 30 secs jumps up and out by 15mins 40 secs. Mum watches on from above the nest Dad looking out from the garage and off we (it) goes..

Lovely clip Taz - they look very ready to go... a lot keener & lively than mine. Maybe it's the crowd effect Yes, they've been like this for a few days now so I'm fully expecting them to go today.

Maybe, I have had them go from not moving/hopping to just fledging cutting out the middle step. Are they wing stretching? A fair bit of wing stretching and flapping - interestingly on that front the smallest one has been doing the most.
