Maybe South West London / Surrey borders is generally warmer than elsewhere in the UK and hence nesting is further underway?

Thanks I feel very lucky to have 2 bluetit nests this year, not in camera boxes but hey ho, they seemed to have favoured boxes higher up on the house wall rather than lower down boxes on fences. The second female has chose a box that I only put up last year just under the eaves but it was put up late in the season, coincidentally the first female had originally chose this box and had cleaned all the poo out from a winter rooster early on in the year before going on to nest in the one round the corner of the house!

I never say never and am an eternal optimist, but I am so lucky to have them nest for the pat 3 years, they come to the garden and feed so I know they will be back with their babies and there will be live food for them! In the meantime I can watch the nests on the forum!

Glad to see you have some nesting going on. Hopefully things will swing into action soon. I noticed a pair of sparrows eyeing up one of my boxes today so I am clinging on to the hope that this season is just a late starter

Good to know the sparrows are more positive.

Nest might be slow Matt but it’s looking good . Still time for the sparrows too, so do keep us informed when you can. I am away at the moment and hate the fact that I can’t see what is happening in my box - just hope all is progressing when I get home . Sue

Sorry to hear Karen, but fingers crossed - it really is a strange year as others have mentioned. Still a chance I reckon.

Wow! Eggs Pete! Not even a piece of moss in my boxes. I am beginning to think my birds are fooling me and have chosen to nest elsewhere! Yep, you're miles ahead of me as well! I'm in West Sussex, which is supposed to be relatively warm! I'd guess that my box is two weeks behind the average, and not a late starter/changed nest location since she has been fussing in and out for over a month..

Hi all, sorry for very sporadic posting this year! Just been away again for Easter hols (a week) and come back to at least a bit o progress in the concrete box: Still seem to be way behind others on here, and also behind my usual nesting time, but it has been a very weird spring weather wise.. I was hoping to see some proper nesting in the sparrow box upon my return, but not yet. Plenty of double sparrow visits this mornning though so fingers still crossed for that one!

I've got a feeling this isn't the same female as last year... This one is much more protective of the eggs and hardly leaves them exposed for more than a split second. She's always softly extending a wing over them whenever she's making nest adjustments. By contrast last year's female left her eggs loads of times completely visible, almost to the point of carelessness. Made them much easier to count at least.
It was much warmer last spring though, so I wonder if it's all sowewhat related to temperature/weather?

Oh Karen how frustrating! I guess it's just a reminder we have no control over these little birds and their choices. Some comfort that at least they are nesting somewhere near so hope for next year maybe?

A little snippet of the starling turning her eggs this morning: on the bluetit front the second female is now lining her nest with soft material so the nest should be nearly completed, I think the first is already on eggs but how many is anyone's guess! although she is not happy by this arrangement as she saw them mating in my maple tree yesterday and angrily drove the second female away who went straight back into her box with the first female in hot pursuit, at one point I thought she was going to enter but luckily she just sat on the roof protesting a bit before giving up!

I know we are all really surprised by the fact that Elizabeth and Malcolm’s boxes remain empty BUT they are still getting pairs visit both boxes. There are still nest wriggles going on , and, looking at the overview on past years , some of the nests didn’t have any eggs laid until 24th and 25th April!! We all know how quickly these birds can build a nest if they want to - so there is still some hope lovely people Well I truly hope so anyway. Hoping for a surge of building over the coming week. Sue
