Hi sammi Good luck for your season you sound well prepared Now that is a sight I would like to see in my side view box, I’ve taken the metal plate off the front in the hope it increases the chance of it being used I have five boxes in position I will be more than happy to get just one active nest 😊 I’ve noticed a blue tit visit one of my log boxes

Wow Pete that is a deep nest. I wondered if they have a preferred distance to the entrance. It's incredible. Can't wait for next year. Good luck

Hi all I popped on just to see if anyone was around and I see Ann,Paul and Pete are already thinking of Spring 23 as I am. Our boxes are all in the same places and cleaned out ready. That feeling of expectation is already with me. Yesterday we made a huge decision regarding all the wires coming in as they have been coming through a hole Hubby drilled in the frame of our wooden window. The window is being replaced in the next few weeks so we had to decide whether we should just have the wires come through the open window (not an option in the cold)or to go for drilling a hole through the wall. So yesterday armed with a borrowed drill and bit we did it. Of course like all our DIY jobs it didn't quite go to plan but we have now got 5 cameras permanently wired through. So if the wall doesn't fall down we are set for 2023. We had a beautiful great tit check out the side view box and I've noticed a pair have been checking out all the boxes

Since clearing out the old BT nest I've started checking the motion detection alerts on my phone app and these show at least one BT taking a more or less daily venture into the box to have a quick peck about and look around. Can't help thinking these little visits must've been happening before, too, with the old nest still in situ, but I wasn't monitoring it so will never know! Oh well, some interest still shown, so hurray for that.

Just to add...so busy work-wise over the summer I've had zero time to spare to look into upgrading any of my camera/network stuff. As time is ticking away I'm not sure I'll be able to get around to dabbling in raspberry pi stuff or any different cameras this year. We shall see. But if I get another year like the one just gone I'll be delighted anyway, even if it's all the same kind of pictures again Fingers crossed!

Happy October everyone Just cleaned out the main tree box and was amazed to see how tall and dense the BT nest was. Around 3 inches deep at least. I've put a 28mm plate on the front of the box for the coming season - hope I haven't jinxed anything! I also looked into the robin box with the aim of clearing out the nest from it, but the nest had already been pulled out and was hanging in the ivy below. Not sure if that means something's been roosting in there or if it's just fallen out. Anyway I took the old bits of nest away, trimmed a few bits of ivy back to clear the view, and left it. Wishing you all good luck for the coming months.

Let me tell you a little bit more about myself. From last few weeks, I am trying to attract the little hummingbirds in my garden. But despite of their season, I am unable to get a single bird in my garden. Let me know if dogs can discourage the little birds from traveling to my garden as I have a small Pomchi in my garden. He is very quiet and shy. I don't think it can cause any problem for birds. But still let me know if it can cause any issue for them.

i totally with you. Mealworms are very rich in protein and packed with nutrients such as amino acids and fat. That’s why they are good for pet birds, fish and snakes.

Hi everyone Well I know I’m really early to be posting for the new season.today is the first day I’ve seen and heard birds in a long time. I also saw the blue tit visit the triangle box this morning this box was just a roosting box I’ve taken it down and moved it to the back fence maybe in will be used as a nest. I have made a small change and taken the metal plate off my unused camera box hoping and wishing this will invite a better chance for a real interest in the box. The hole is 32mm without the plate Oh yes and a replacement log box in same position as this years blue tit nest.

Hello‚ my name is Nicky․ I've loved and interacted with animals and all things nature all throughout my life‚ and I've always felt a strong connection to wild birds․ I'm working towards a career in ornithology. I've recently moved into a new house with a small, but sweet backyard, and am currently working to make it most optimal for birds and other wildlife. I'm having a lot of fun learning on my own, but any tips and advice are not only welcome, but very appreciated! I'm generally a pretty shy, calm and collected person‚ but I do love a good conversation‚ and I care deeply for the people whom I hold close. I'm excited to get to know the people here!

In winter you find almost only Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), they are everywhere but, in the reeds, they look like a demolition company

Thanks for sharing the fledging Benn. They look a healthy lot and hopefully will do well. I know what you mean about seeing older dead chicks being removed. Not an easy watch. See you in 2023. Maybe next year the sparrows might decide to nest at ours. I looked over our fence and spied the sparrows nesting in the eaves of the school next door. Given the choice I think they would always choose a gap in a roof over a box Thanks Sammi. Good luck with the Sparrows Sammi. Ours never took to the Sparrow camera box we erected high up. The Great Tits used it this year though. Our Sparrows used the Swift boxes last year. This year I blocked the entrances until May but one still built after but abandoned the nest. Like you say they and Starlings seem to always prefer the roof gap! See you in 2023!

We left for Egypt with 6 healthy chicks. We returned last Wednesday morning 15th June to find two dead chicks and three live ones. It was quite grisly to watch Mrs Blue Tit pull apart the bodies of the two dead ones in order to facilitate their removal from the box . We had to go away again for a few days to attend a funeral in Newark and returned to an empty nest. The DVR shows they fledged around 09:30 on Friday during the very hot day. I have clipped the three below they all looked quite healthy. Perhaps there were not enough natural food the week we were away and we believe the weather wasn't great. I left it too late to get some more mealworms before we went. Well another season over. See you all next year
