I’ve no idea what is happening here (if anything)with the birds I’ve been away visiting my grandchildren the last 3 days 😊 Prior to that I had stopped looking as it just wasn’t happening
I will link up my camera today I’m truly not expecting anything unless it is reason for a reject from another nest site 🙏🏻🤞🏻
Ps It’s a cold wind here and all far to quiet no need to get camera switched on as I said my season over

Hi Sue What's happened to the warm weather? I hope you have found a warm place to stay. Certainly where we are the temperatures are still a bit disappointing. Enjoy your holiday Hi Sammi, first day here a couple of sunny hours in the afternoon. Sunday, mainly dull and cold. Monday, dull in the morning but did get and hour or so of sun in the afternoon but not what I’d call warm. Today we went to the Minack theatre in the morning and it was freezing and windy, this afternoon in Porthleven was sunny and warm 😃. Not the warm weather we had been promised by the forecasts, but maybe, just maybe it is getting warmer. Cornwall is a big county so obviously may not be the same where you are. Still enjoying being here but missing seeing what is or isn’t happening with my birds at home Sue

You know Matt I just saw the round shape and my half brain kicked in I really must take a break from all this I think it's all proving too much. I knew you had the lovely concrete ones I am going for a lie down

Looks interesting - the review says autofocus isn't continuous for video recording...is that still the case? Tempting to get one just to have a play with it... Guessing it's possible in theory to get a stream from it via ffmpeg or something?

What's the new camera Matt? Great quality image. It is a 16MP Arducam autofocus camera for Raspberry Pi (all my boxes use RPi). It can do video at 1080p but also take stills at 16mp, and the pic I posted is about a quarter frame crop of a 16mp still. thepihut.com/products/arducam-imx519-autofocus-camera-module-for-raspberry-piSammi this is a concrete box (3 holes) not a log box, but round inside like the log box. Camera is housed in a wooden lid along with LED lights and raspberry pi.

Officially given up hope now Well it's been warm today and if anything it's been quieter than ever One box has regular visits from a wasp who I think is pinching bits of wood for a nest somewhere, another has the spider who regularly catches a wasp or two, the box that was used last year has seen nothing recently and the one with a partial nest has had a couple of very quick visits by a couple of sparrows and one bluetit but only to hang onto the entrance. So all in all unless we get a second nest I think it unlikely we will have anything to follow. I will enjoy all your nests instead.

I've seen lots of shadows in the boxes today. Has anyone seen any visits.

I was just about to ask the same. I think those log boxes are great. How is the camera mounted in them please? Is it just attached to underside of lid?

Here's a close up from today - a small amount of softer stuff has started coming in. Liking the new camera, which now has autofocus as well which will be useful I think. Not much action from the sparrows today. It still seems really cold outside for late April!

I remember a year or two ago Pete I ran out of live mealworms and was panicking slightly as mum was getting fairly dependent on them. I tried dried and she wouldn't take them at all, and I think this is pretty common? Luckily my live ones arrived soon enough and all was well, but I've never tried dried again (starlings love them, though!). Just get the smallest meal worms you can.

Not heard that Pete, and never known chicks be fed soaked dried mealworms. I will be interested to hear what others say. Wax worms are definitely a favourite but more expensive. Sue

Thanks Sue 👍 I read somewhere about live mealworms being a bit risky as dead ones can carry salmonella? Something I read was claiming soaking dried ones in water before putting them out is less risky.

Hi Pete, definitely ‘live’ mealworms or wax worms. The chicks can only get moisture (like we need water) from live food. The parents try to get enough caterpillars, spiders etc but when these are in short supply it is good if we humans can supplement by offering them a source of ‘live’ food . The chicks initially can only swallow tiny things so some people get some mini mealworms, but the chicks do grow very quickly so many just plump for standard mealworms. Hope that is some help. The parents will eat dried mealworms etc as they can get their water elsewhere, but the chicks obviously can’t do this. Go ‘live’ always for chicks. Good idea to try putting some out a few days before the chicks hatch to let the parents ‘find’ this supply and get ready to use them. Good luck. Sue

Can anyone on here advise what's best to get in terms of mealworms - dried or live? And at what point to introduce them? I'm determined to supplement my BTs this year as I'm sure lack of succulent food was a big factor last year in the poor survival rate of the chicks (only 3 fledging out of 15 hatched).

Good to see your progress update Matt. Funny how the nesting stages can be so out of synch across different locations but agree this spring has been a very weird one so far. Looking forward to seeing more updates.

Glad you have some good news Matt, look forward to your updates, will you be streaming? Will see how it goes Karen - I've got a new camera and not sure yet if I can get it streaming but if I can I will! Or perhaps the sparrows, if they go for it? Unfortunately I don't have the bandwidth to stream two at once..
